Consolation winners Midgets look strong in tourney play by Danny Millar Port Perry Malmont Farms Midgets played their best softball of the season as they won the consolation championship of the Clare- mont tournament on Satur- day June 7. They played two bad innings in losing to a powerful Napanee team 8-0 but came back to beat Lind- say 6-5 and hosting Clare- mont bit the dust in the consolation game. Against Claremont in the last game Port Perry looked almost "invincible. was a very noticable change in the<teams attitude after the Napanee loss. Lindsay and Claremont they were enthusiastic on the bench and played sharp defence on the field. Norm- ally quiet bats like Peter Christie and Kevin Harris came alive in the last two games to give Port a lift and drive in key runs. There Against Phil Robinson was a stand- out in the Claremont game as he blanked the home side through the first five innings, during which time his team- mates piled up ten runs behind him. Five of the ten runs cross- ed the plate in the fifth inning. Christie led off with a single and stole second. He went to third on Harris's infield out and scored on pinch hitter Keith Tremb- -slay's wrong field single to right. Tremblay came out of the game immediately for the faster John Butler. Butler went around to third base on two wild pitch- es from Darryl Norton and scored on Mark Jeffrey drive into left centr: field. Todd Wilbur and Scott Sandison had back to back hits and both were driven home when Brian Dickson singled to centerfield. Port Perry scored twice in the first and third innings and once in the fourth. Lead- off hitter Christie started it in the first with a single and then he advanced into scoring position on a passed ball. Harris's first infield out moved Christie over to third where he scored from an error. Sean Fewer got on base with the error and moved around to third and then came in to score on Jeffrey's sacrifice fly. In the third inning Harris doubled to right center and Fewer got on via another error, placing runners on the corners. Jeffrey hit an infield ground out but Harris came in to score. Fewer scored when Wilbur hit a safety past second base. Dickson got the run in the fourth session after walking, going to second on a sacrifice and coming the rest of the way when Robinson doubled him in. The tournament games marked the first time that the Port Perry Midgets have worn the Malmont Farms jerseys. They are green with white sleeves and white lett- ering on the front, spelling out the sponsor's name. the numerals on the back are also white. the uniform is one of the few in Port Perry that does not have the town name written across it. The pants have not arrived yet but are supposed to be white with green pinstripes. Perhaps the new sweaters brought Port Perry some luck. Or maybe it was the fact that Port won the coin toss in all three games for the right to be the home team. But whatever it was Port sure needed a bit of luck to advance past Lindsay in the second game. Lindsay led 4-0 going into the fifth inning. It was destined to be the final frame because of a tournament ruling which limits the games to an hour and fifteen minutes. Port Perry came Packers nip Flames 5-4 to put an end to three-game winning streak by Paul Beare Last Monday's ball hockey action saw .the Flames winning streak end at three games. This could be con- sidered a mild upset, as the Packers edged them 5-4. The two teams traded first period goals. Randy Knight scored for the Flames, assis- ted by Mike McQuade, and Mike Mitchell replied for the Pack, with Ken Fraser and Aldon Smith adding assists. The Pack took command early in the second on two quick goals. Aldon Smith on a short handed effort, assisted by Bruce Smith. Bruce Woodrow assisted by Donovan Smith and Ed Olsen. Dave Jackson and Knight combined to set Ritchie Lefort up to narrow the gap to one goal, thus ending the second. Midway through the third frame, the Pack scored to take a 4-2 lead on Aldon Smith's second of the game, assisted by Mitchell. Ritchie Lefort got his second to make it 4-3, assisted by Greg Fedyk and Knight. The last minute of the game saw some furious action at both ends. First, the Pack scored on Mitchells second, assisted by Fraser. . The Flames tried desper- ately to tie the game with an extra attacker, but could only manage one goal by Lefort, assisted by Fedyk. What a finish. The-Aztecs got revenge in "the second game by downing the Trojans 5-2. (Earlier in Hurricanes lose badly to Ajax In girls soccer action, Thursday June 5th the Homestead Furniture Hurri- canes lost to Ajax Rug and Tile 8 goals to 1. The Trojans narrowed the gap early in the second on Mark Cleveland's marker, assisted by Mark Wilson. The Azzies got one back on Mark Jarvis' tally, assisted by Sinclair. The Trojans, Cleveland scored his second of the game, an unassisted goal late in the same frame. The score remained 3-2 until midway through the third when Jarvis counted his second of the night. Assists went to Paul Beare and Quantrill. With just minutes remaining, Rob Kroonenberg fired in the insurance marker to give the Azzies the win. Bill and Paul Beare assisted. One highlight of this season willbe 'an East-West All Star game against the newly formed Uxbridge league, to be set at a later date. PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, June 11, 1980 -- 13 up with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to gain a tie, apparently forcing the son made a throwing error from his shortstop position. That errant throw allowed game to a sixth inning. But according to the official scorer, Port had counted six runs during the rally. To confuse matters even more it was revealed later that Lindsay had scored twice in the second inning but had been given credit for only one run. The strange fifth inning started with Dave Davis getting on base and going around to third when Todd Blayone laid down a bunt that the Lindsay infielder thought would roll foul. It didn't, allowing Port runners on first and third. Kevin Long pounded the ball down the left field line, scoring Davis and moving Blayone into scoring position. Blay- one came in with the second run on Butler's fielder's choice. Long came in to score the third run after an easy pop up was dropped by Lindsay first baseman Steven Howell. The key hit of the game, and possibly the entire tournament for Port, was recorded by Harris, who singled to score Jeffrey and Christie, who had preceeded home with a base hit. The other unusual inning was the second when Lind- say appeared to have scored a pair but was given credit only for one. Brad Comer got the first one after Dick- the batter to go to second base. From there he went into third on a wild pitch by Jeffrey. He scored on a single, with what should have been the fifth run of the game. Lindsay added a run in the top of the fourth. De Ja vu? Port Perry held Napanee, last year's Provincial champions as Bantams on even terms for five of the seven innings. Napanee scored four times in each of the first and fourth frames. Scott Thompson started the first with a chop in the damp dirt. Doug Weiss doubled past third baseman Rob Franssen(to put both runners one hi} away from scoring. Thontpson brought in th e first one when Frans- sen threw the ball into the dirt, trying to get him at home plate. Two consecu- tive hits drove in a pair of runs. Napanee loaded the bases in the fourth and then Terry Gray singled in a run. Weiss followed up with his base hit, driving in a second run. Both hits were to centerfielder Harris, who made two good throws to keep it down to one run each time. Graham Sierman drove in a pair of runs when his bouncer elud- ed Franssen at the hot corner. 1000000000 Township of Scugog FENCE & PATIO cr ENTRE PR g * Commercial & Residential * Farm Gates & Fence " ire 125- 1 7121 bd 3 insisiiations & Repalrs BIRDSEYE POOL WATER STREET - PORT PERRY PUBLIC SWIMMING: Opening June 22, 1980 Weekdays: 1:00 to 5:00 P.M; 6:00 to 9:00 P.M.
