'Durham debates sale of Region's industrial land Durham council last week rejected a proposal to have the Region's industrial land listed for sale through the Oshawa and District Real Estate Board. Instead, the council agreed on a resolution whereby the land will be listed through one or more real estate companies for a period of one year on a co-broke basis for brokers. The argument not to list with the Oshawa and District Real Estate Board was led by Oshawa councillor Allan Pilkey who told councillors that the city of Oshawa has had good success marketing its industrial land in the past year by using a single real estate company. He said that in the past _ Vf) Sos Sowell 5 LIMITED Soe? 203 Queen Street - Port Perry OPEN: Mon., Tues., Wed. & Sat. 10to 6 OPEN: Thursday & Friday 10to 9 - EAR PIERCING - BY APPOINTMENT WEDNESDAY AFTERNOONS year, about 20 acres of indus- trial land owned by the city have been sold to private companies for development, out of a total of about 150 acres. Councillor Pilkey has been critical in the past of the apparent lack of success Durham Region has had sell- ing its industrial land. While he told council he has "no vendetta" against Durham"s industrial development department, he added that in his opinion "the department is not functioning properly"' regarding the sale of land. Oshawa councillor John Aker also argued against the resolution to list with the ODREB, suggesting that a potential buyer might use the services of a broker or CORINTHIAN' POOLS Aluminum in-ground swimming pools vinyl liner (Saf-t-pla). Durham presently owns industrial land in Sunder- land, Oshawa and Whitby, ranging in price from $12,000 an acre in the northern communities to more than -$45,000 an acre for fully serviced land in Oshawa and Whitby. In voting .down the recommendation to list with ODREB, several councillors said they could not support because part of the recom- mendation called for Durham to use money for advertising and promotion if _a_ sale was completed without using real estate agents. The resolution called for the commissions saved in cases like this to be used for "advertising Durham Region as an attractive industrial location." Pickering councillor Doug Dickerson said council has set an amount in its budget for advertising and promo- tion by the development department, and any savings . on commissions should go back into the general coffers. In an effort to help attract more industry to Durham Region, director of develop- ment Tom Flood recently spent 18 days in Europe attending various trade shows in three countries. A report to council on his trip shows a cost of $3987 for the 18 days. The report says that although discussions "were opened up with 24 new companies, decisions on any of these are not to be anticipated in 1980." 8 AERA SOO WR SEA ar hig - PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, June 4, 1980 -- 3 . Forest fire danger in area of Scugog The forest fire danger in a heavily wooded section in the southeast corner of Scugog Township has reached the critical level according to Chief Len Scott of the Caes- area fire department. Chief Scott told council that the extreme danger is a result of several factors: dry weather, piles of brush from logging operations, and heavy use on the weekend by dirt track motorcyclists. ty "It is a real fire hazard at e moment, and I'm afraid ere could be trouble there," said Chief Scott. He went on to say that if a BRL AAR) Ni] ml x yi Van VA fire breaks out in the area, the condition of access trails is so poor that tank trucks and other heavy equipment could not get close enough to fight a fire. "The trails are so bad I wouldn't take my trucks in there,"" he told council Monday afternoon. "We'd drive the trucks as close as possible, run out the hoses and then try to put it out using portable back- packs."
