S. S Big 21.3 win for Juveniles over RH Cabinet of Oshawa by Danny Millar Port Perry Mother's Pizza Juveniles got their first win of the new softball season at the expense of the RH Cabinet Juveniles of Oshawa on Thursday, May 29. Did 'they ever! By the time the smoke had cleared and the game had ended, Port Perry walked off the Joe Fowler Memorial diamond with a resounding 21-3 triumph. Port pounded three differ- ent Cabinet pitchers, start- ing with Darrell Jerome. He was replaced in the midst of a seven run seventh inning in favour of Don Taylor. Tay- lor was wild on the rubber, throwing first delivery behind Dave Canning. He . did not throw his second strike until Bob Ireland was caught looking, the fourth hitter to face Taylor. Port looked unbeatable, especialy in the seventh. It started innocently enough, with a walk to Greg Fedyk. Fedyk stole second and came on to third on a pitch in the dirt. He scored on a double to left field by Dave Dickson. Tim Thompson followed up Dickson's shot by putting one in the same place, also for a double. Raymond Gibson doubled down the left field line to score Thompson. Gibson touched home plate after Mike Doupe hit a two bagger to left. Four consecutive doubles forced Jerome to take a walk off the mound. When Taylor finally found the approximate where- abouts of home plate Cann- ing nailed him for another double but came around to score, on what arguably could be called an inside the par home run. In the sixth inning Canning hit a legitim- ate inside the park HR as a pinch hitter. Port didn't waste any time getting started, scoring five times in the home half of the first segment. Again it start- ed with a leadoff walk by Fedyk, who went into second on a close infield out by Ireland. Fedyk tallied when Dickson pounded a pitch off the right field fence on one bounce for a triple. He later scored on a wild pitch. Thompson, who threw another good game for Port, hit a high chopper to third base for a base hit to keep the opening rally alive. He went to third on Carl Durward's single to center- field and then scored when Mark Braun hit a slow roller down the first base line that handcuffed catcher Bill Steeves. Durward scored on an infield out by Doupe and Braun on a wild pitch to end the uprising. Port scored in their half of every inning except the fifth. They netted one run in each of the second, third and fourth sessions and three in the sixth. They followed up the big seventh frame by counting twice in the eighth. (Turn to page 15) Second big win for Juveniles by Danny Millar A red hot Port Perry Canadian Tire men's softball team pounded the always tough Pontypool Generals 17- 4 on Tuesday May 27, getting its fourth win in league play against one loss. Ron Redman hit his third home run of the season as Port Perry pounded Ponty- pool pitchers Bob Talbot and lefty Brent Fallis. Phil Cochrane recorded the win as he struck out two. Talbot and Fallis combined to whiff seven hitters. Redman's blow was a three run shot into the fence- less fields of the General's park. It keyed a four run inning in the fourth. The biggest Port rally came in the third when they touched Talbot for five runs, Pontypool gained revenge during a tournament this weekend when they defeated Port in the final with Fallis hitting a homer. That mark- ed the first time in four tries that Port has lost to the Generals. ports Hall of Fame by Danny Millar If to no one else, 1980 will be a memorable year for George Cope. The tall centre was awarded the Male Athlete of the Year award at Port Perry High School's annual Athletic Banquet last Wednesday May 28. He was one of five members elected to the newly formed Port Perry High School Sports Hall of Fame. Cope starred on Port Perry basketball teams for the five years he was at PPHS. Last year he captain- ed the Redmen to the COSSA title and a berth in the regional championships in Ottawa. This year the team bowed out in the first game of LOSSA but Cope was still the team's leading scorer and rebounder. In addition, he and teammate Mike Patton, were named to the Durham All-star team that competed against other stars at the end of the regular schedule. For the Sécond year in a row the athlete of the year award went to the Student council president. Last year Kathy Smith was the recipient, this year it was Cope. Cope is probably the second best high school cager to come out of Port Perry. The most famous is Jim Zoet, now touring with the National team. Both men received their basket- ball rudiments from Arend Dekker, who along with Paul Arculus, masterminded the championship drive a year ago. Cope was given his third consecutive Boys Basketball MVP at the banquet. He also played on the volleyball team this past season. There are similiarities between Cope and Leslie Forder, who was named the 1980 Girls' Athlete of the Year. the Student Council Execu- tive, also the Girls Basket- ball MVP, and also elected to the Hall of Fame.
