Cochrane beat Janet- ville 4-2 on Wednesday, May 22 and Walker eked out a 3-2 decision in the game against Yelverton on May 25. Walker hurled eight score- less innings at Yelverton, as the home team got its two runs in the fifth, both un- earned on shortstop Robert Evan's error. Larry Aldred opened the fifth by getting on base after Evans booted his grounder. On the next play Ivan Disney hit another rou- tine ground ball to Evans and this time the normally sure-handed infielder fired it over first basewoman Jane Thorton's head. A single through the box netted one run and Disney scored on Rick Daynard's infield out. Port Perry connected for its run early, scoring once in the top of the first and twice in the third. In the first, leadoff hitter, Ken Bryant worked lefthander Donnie Timms for a walk and then caught the Yelverton middle defence sleeping on a delay- ed steal of second base. Bryant-went into third on Don Phinney's fly ball to Disney in right field and scored when Ken Davidson singled over second base- man George McCullough's head. Mark Lee hit a single to right in the third and ended up scoring after Phinney sacrificed him to third and Davidson tripled him in. Davidson scored the winning run in the same inning. The rest of the game was marked by excellent defens- ive plays, two by Yelverton leftfielder Rick Daynard and two by Port Perry first base- people, Thornton "and Jay Williams. In the seventh inning Evans led off with a single down the left field line that looked like a sure extra baser. He was thrown out at second by Daynard on 'a perfect strike to McCull- ough. McCullough ended the inning with a good catch while backing up on Phinn- ey's hit which was headed into shallow right field. Daynard made a superb shoestring catch of f Walker's sinking liner, while going to his right, in the eight frame. The inning before Daynard was the victim of Thornton's good play when she caught an intended sacrifice bunt in --the-air and doubled him off first. Ironically it was Thornton who was replaced by Williams with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth for defensive purpos- es. After Larry Alldred had been walked intentionally, to set up a force at any play with the weak hitting Disney due up, Williams was sent in for Thorton by coach Doug Scott. Disney's first pitch was hit in the dirt. Williams lunged, scooped it up in a cloud of dirt and fired to Phinney at home plate, for the force out. JANETVILLE Port Perry jumped on starter Dave Mills for four runs in the home half of the fifth inning and that was all they needed as Cochrane allowed a run in the eighth and on unearned marker in the ninth to gain the victory 4-2 over Janetville. Evans started the fifth segment rally with his lead- off base on balls and went into second after Randy Crawford hit a Texas league single into center field. They were sacrificed into scoring position and then scored on a double by Ken Bryant. Bryant scored himself on the SL Ideal location for Houseboats, Runabouts and Cruisers. With two out, Williams tripled in Scott who had doubled.down the first base line. Williams shot went a long way, almost over the right field fence. Janetville got a runner on in the eighth with the help of a fielder's choice and a wild pitch and then he scored on a single up the middle with two out. Janetville's other run came in the final inning as a result of shortstop Bryant's error. The number of miscues that Bryant and Evans have made at short this year have been misleading. Both possess strong, riflelike -arms and good gloves. They also have fine range and are good hitters, Evans possibly being the best on the team. Combined they give Port Perry the best one-two short- stop tandem in the Lake Scugog League and, in addition, both can play other positions.
