As Dracula, the world's most infamous solitary drinker, Cam' Muir was both charming and sinister, a melodramatic villain, the type of which nightmares are made. Ms. McCal- lum made Mina's transfor- mation from victim to vamp as convincing and dramatic as her chance from virginal white to the seductive crimson in which she was to become Dracula's bride. In choosing Mina as his mate, Dracula had first to weigh the charms of the persistent and ubiquitous Sybil Seward, played hilar- iously by comedienne Lesley McNulty. An inmate of the asylum, Dracula's flunky, the irrepressible Renfield, was played both for comedy and pathos with energy and sensitivity by Tricia Fewer. Latuxie O'Reilly, as the aged, loyal Hennesey, and Sue Doupe, as an over-sexed, disrespectful Wesley (both attendants in the asylum) gave cameo performances to make those small parts memorable. Remarkable as these per- formances were, the weight of the play fell on three young men, Mike Stokes as Dr. Seward, Chris Dormer as Van Helsing, and Jeff Foote as Mina's fiance, Jonathan Harker, the intrepid vampire slayers. There were too many memorable moments to recall here in detail, from Renfield's fly-eating to Sybil's secret drinking, from Dracula's mysterious disap- pearance before our eyes to his death in the crypt (against whose black walls, Mina's dress is a stain of blood.) Special effects (such as a ~ chair that moved by itself), a solid set constructed by" students under Mr. Keith Gibb, and decorated by Ms. Crocker's .art students, costumes sewed by Mrs. Quail and her students, light- ing by Jon Howell, sound by Alison McNab and Ms. Janet Watson, Dracula's coffin, designed and built by Mr. 'Patton, an efficient stage crew, Paula -Price's stage management, Lea Dowson's unfailing "help and Mrs. Lackie's diving interven- tions all contributed to the High school's most success- 'ful drama nights ever. Many in the audience who had come prepared to endure a night of high school theatrics left having been delighted by an evening of good amateur theatre.
