by Danny Millar John Logamon came with- in one batter of throwing a perfect game at the Ports Perry Malmont Farms JMidgets as the Oshawa Fire Department went on to an easy 17-0 victory in four innings on Tuesday, May 13. It marked the first of two easy wins for Oshawa over Port Perry teams during the week. ' Logamon walked only one hitter in the four flawless 'innings he threw. He struck out the side in each of the frames. The big right hander just kept blowing fastballs past the swinging eMidget bats all night. Oshawa pounded starter Mark Jeffrey and then Phil Robinson for 11 runs in the third inning. A leadoff double to centerfield follow- ed by a single to the same spot scored the first point of s the longest inning of the shortest game of exhibition season so far. John Jeff's sacrificed the runner to second, who then advanced to third on a passed ball by catcher Clay Lovering. The third run of the inning came home on a throwing error by shortstop Ian Dick- son. Bob Bathe doubled in another run when his shot to right field went beyond the grasp of Robinson; who star- ted at second base. Bathe scored on a drive off the bat of Jeffs, who was coming up for the second time in the inning. ¢ A walk to Ted Buttons load e/bases and Jeffrey walked in a run on the next hitter. Two more runs crossed the plate on a center field single and then in came Jeffs on third baseman Robert Franssen's error. Palmer Knight doubled in two more runs a couple of batsmen later on his blow down the left field line. Several of the Oshawa hits came back through the middle where Dickson and Robinson were controlling the infield. Often when this occurs it gives evidence of limited fielding range of the shortstop and second base- man. Port may have an excuse because Dickson hasn't played in a year and Robinson was playing a posi- tion that was foreign to him. It is likely that Todd Wilbur will handle most of the grounders at second this season. The only other big inning for the visitors was the fourth when they touched the two hurlers for five runs. Oshawa quickly loaded the bases on errors by Jeffrey and Dickson, and a base hit. At this point Jeffrey was removed for Robinson. Dickson committed another error, allowing one run in. A sparkling defensive play by centerfield Todd Blayone stopped at least one run from scoring. Blayone caught a fly ball on the run and then threw a strike to Lovering at the plate to nab the runner who was trying to score from third. Earlier in the game Blayone made a sliding catch off the bat of Buttons to end the second inning. Also in that frame rightfielder Kevin Harris made a good catch, moving into center for it. : After Blayone's play in the fourth, Logamon drove in Golfers can help "I'm more nervous before this event than I am before teeing off for a major pro tournament", said Al Balding, "really -there's so ® much more at stake!" Balding, whose name is known and respected throughout the entire golf world made the comment in announcing plans for the 1980 "Al Baldwin Golf Week for ¢ Timmy". He went on to say, "Last year, working the Ontario Professional Golf Assoc- iation, local Police Assoc- iations and Carling O'Keefe, 2,000 golfers raised over ($31,000) thirty-one thousand 8dollars for the Ontario Society for Crippled Children. Logamon went into third when Van Camp, while still on the ground, tossed the ball over Blayone's head after the centerfielder came over to cover. The game was competitive for about half an inning, the top of the first, when Oshawa could only manage one run. Dickenson opened the match with a leadoff single and then scored on a double. Logamon was simply awesome on the rubber for Oshawa. Rarely did he permit a Port batsman to even lay lumber on the ball. A large majority of strikes he threw were swinging, indicating that he was simply overpowering the younger hitters. The only person he put on base was PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, May 21, 1980 -- 13 'Ouch! Oshawa stomps on Midgets 1 Franssen when the Port third sacker was hit by a pitch. This was the second pre- season game of the year for Port. Last week they beat the Port Perry juveniles in their first start of the year. It may serve as a consolation that | the Oshawa Fire Department team hammer- ed the juveniles two nights later, though not with the Don Postill Manchester, Ont. 7-0 same mastery that they did to the midgets. Like the other game the midgets played, there was a couple of bright spots in the. humiliating loss. Blayone's play in the outfield has been excellent in the two contests. Behind the plate, Lovering has been a very capable receiver. Franssen has been sharp with the glove at the hot corner.
