2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., February 20, 1980 Crises Centre opens, will offer help to victims of rape, sexual assault A ribbon cutting ceremony Friday morning marked the official opening of the Scugog Crisis Centre. Located in a small office in the Masonic Lodge on Queen Street in Port Perry, the Crisis Centre volunteer staff members will offer support and guidance for the victims of rape and other forms of sexual assault and abuse. Crisis Centre co-ordinator Jeannette Ross said Friday that the organization has been set up in Scugog for several reasons: offer immediate guidance and _ counselling to help victims get over the initial shock and trauma of a sexual assault; offer further advice and guidance over a longer term and serve as an information centre to help broaden public knowledge and awareness of these problems in the community at large. Sixteen volunteer counsellors are now complet- ing training, and a counsel- lor will be on duty at the office week-days from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. The centre has set up a "hot-line" number with an Oshawa answering service open 24 hours a day, and anyone calling that number Crisis Centre co-ordinator Jeannette Ross accepts office keys from Masonic Lodge Master John Ross during an official opening ceremony last Friday morning. The Masonic Lodge has donated the office space free of charge. DO-NO's Record, Craft & Hobby World Port Perry Plaza Phone: 985-2839 Hey Kids: DO-NO's is having a G. The "hot-line"' number is 579-8006 and is toll free from Port Perry. The Crisis Centre will accept collect calls from Scugog residents living in the 986 exchange area. The number of the office in the Masonic Lodge is 985-8850. Although the office space has been donated rent-free by the Masonic Lodge, the estimated annual operating expenses for the Centre is $1000. This money is coming from several sources: The Lake Scugog G.R.S. has "adopted" the Centre as its official charity, service clubs have made donations, and the organization itself will raise money from such things as dances. The plans to set up the Crisis Centre was set in motion last fall, and has received support from the police, local clergy and medical officers. Volunteers will be at the Crisis Centre five days a week from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M. Anyone wishing immediate assistance or counselling can call a Crisis Centre "hot line" at 579-8006 24 hours a day, and the call will be transferred to one of 16 volunteers who have taken specialized training. Appeals decision (From page 1) effect on the value of their properties. The petition to the Cabinet also claims that the OMB decision was not correct in assuming there is no need for an equipment and service outlet in that area. The petition states that the closest implement dealer- ships are presently located at Brooklin, Utica and Blackstock. The petition further states that the dealership is "com- patible with surrounding uses," is not located in highly productive agricul tural land and the zoning complies with the Regional Official Plan. Mr. Labanovich told the Star that the actual dealer- ship would be located 500 feet from the Oshawa Road, and would have set-backs on either side of 75 feet, and a ten-foot "planting strip" along the boundary of the adjacent boundary to the south. At the OMB hearing last month, Scugog Township's planning consultant John McDermott testified that the proposed use of the property as an equipment dealership not only complies with the Regional Official Plan, but is in keeping with good plan- ning principles. It is not known when the Cabinet will deal with the petition. Police report Durham Region police report three minor traffic accidents in Scugog during the past week, all resulting in property damage, but no serious injuries. On February 14, about 5:20 p.m. Colin J. James of Woodville hit an icy section on Regional Road 2. He lost control, and the vehicle flipped over three times before coming to rest. A Fenelon Falls area man also lost control of his vehicle on Regional Road 2 near the 13th Concession, on February 17. ) Ralph McDowell escaped injury when his vehicle went out of control and struck a fence before coming to rest in a field. Robert McClure of R.R. 1 Port Perry struck a deer on Highway 12 just south of the 8th Concession on February 16. McClure was not injured. COTTAGE PROBLEMS Durham Police report that several cottages in the Sunset View Beach area of Lake Scugog were broken into over the weekend. The incidents are being investigated by police, but in one case a motorcycle is reported missing from a cottage owned by a Scarborough resident.
