8 < EO a AA AN a 0 WAR EAR RR TE YR easy without cigs Members of Scugog coun- cil got through their first no- smoking meeting with no problems at all. The weed-free policy went into effect Monday on a trial basis, as council decided two weeks ago to go along with a request from non-smoking Mayor Jerry Taylor to give up the butts during council sessions. Mayor Taylor is the only member of council who does not smoke and he asked council to either give up their smokes or cough up the money for an air filtration system in the council chambers. Being an election year, council opted for the former, for the Monday meeting. Although most members came to the first meeting armed with life-savers and chewing gum, there was no gnashing of teeth or chewing of nails. That first meeting, how- ever, lasted just over two hours, and it remains to be seen whether the smokers on council could tough it through a lengthy budget session without reaching for a smoke to help calm the nerves. On Monday, members of council did ask for a compar- ison of salaries paid in Scugog to those paid coun- cillors in neighbouring mun- icipalities. In making the request, members made it clear they have nc intention of tamper- ing with their resolution of two weeks ago which froze councillors salaries at the 1979 level. However, a couple of coun- cillors indicated they feel that the office of Mayor of Scugog Township is worth more than the $6300 the Mayor now receives each year. Board tables school report (From page 1) about 75 per cent of rated capacity. Durham trustees were also supposed to deal with a similar report on the Zephyr Public School in Uxbridge Township, but this was tabled 3s well because the back-up material was not available. That back-up material deals with such things as present and projected enrol- ments, transportation, and the enrolments in surround- ing schools. When the Board does deal with the Greenbank rec- ommendation in two weeks time, a similar report will be on the agenda concerning the Epsom Public School. Parents in both Epsom and Greenbank who may be worried over the future of their schools can take some comfort by the fact that schools in Port Perry and Uxbridge cannot take addit- tional students. Trustees might consider busing Epsom and Greenbank stud- ents to Sunderland, but that decision no doubt would be highly unacceptable to the parents. An Accommodation Committee is to meet in Epsom this week and come up with a recommendation for the Board. Like Greenbank, Epsom has less than 150 students. However the 93 students at the school represent about 66 per cent of capacity. INSTANT PASSPORT PHOTOS Ready while you wait. SCUGOG FINANCIAL SERVICES 250 QUEEN STREET - PORT PERRY Phone 985-3832 (From page 1) together for the fact finding meeting this week, the Association is faced with another problem; the possible withdrawel by the provincial government of financial support for the operation of a group home in Scugog, Brock, and Uxbridge area. The commitment for financial support from the provincial ministry of social services runs out at the end of March this year, and the Association is now actively working to have this dead- line extended. A spokesman for the Social Services Ministry said a decision to extend the financial support into the next fiscal year will depend on the recommendation of a non-government District Working Group which advises Social Services on projects for the mentally retarded. The spokesman told the Star Monday morning he is PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., February 13, 1980 -- 7 . Council breathing Group home meeting called "optimistic" that the Central Seven group home proposal will get high priority for a carry-over into the next fiscal year. but any final "decision will be made by the Social Services Ministry area manager in Peterborough. While there is a likely possibility that any amend- ment to local zoning by-laws will result in objections to the Ontario Municipal Board a formal amendment to the Durham Region Official Plan is now being processed, and it is not likely that this procedure will be completed by the end of March. The initial proposal by Central Seven for the group home calls for up to eight mentally retarded adults who would be transported daily by van to employment at the Central Seven Work- shop on Regional Road 8, just west of Port Perry. The home would be managed by a residential supervisor and there would be supervision at the home 24 hours a day. 7 PAI you!
