NES] | Sl CR Fi; ok The Durham Region Works Department is concerned that garbage from outside Scugog Township is being dumped at the landfill site on Regional Road 8, just west of Port Perry. A spokesman for the depart- ment said last week that this is the reason why a weigh scale was recently installed near the entrance to the dump, and all trucks and trail- ers entering are required to pass over it. The spokeman admitted there has been some confu- sion on the part of the public over the installation of the scales. However, he said the only purpose of the scales is to give officials some kind of accu- rate reading of how much garbage is coming into the dump for the next six months. If the figures don't compare with the estimates for the amount of garbage in the past six months, officials will know that garbage is going in that should not be. Landfill sites in both Os- hawa and Whitby have been closed in the past year, and commercial operators now have to haul the trash to Scarborough. Officials suspect that some of this garbage may be ending up in the Scugog dump, and if so, they will either put a stop to it, or make them pay a ton- nage charge.
