(, Scugog Island Choir presents successful Christmas concert by Sylvia Brown The Scugog Island Choir held their annual Christmas concert on Sunday evening, December 2nd at the island Church. The theme was "An Old- fashioned Christmas." The back-ground consisted of a snowy winter scene, com- plete with ancient sleigh and old-time street lamp. The choir appeared. The women were clothes in long dresses and olden-day shawls and bonnets, and the men in black top-hats. They proceeded to sing 'Winter', 'Good Christian Men Re- joice', 'Deck the Hall', and 'Here we come a Carolling.' Next we were favoured by a solo from Ethel Freeman entitled 'Christmas Is'. Terri Bell sang a lovely solo, Silent Night, accompanied on the piano by Bonnie Bell. The Junior Choir rang out with the tunes, 'Rocking Round the Xmas Tree', 'Lonesome Christmas Tree', and Marshmallow World. Karen Raines was the 'Tree.' Then, Dorothy Manderson, dressed as a hobo, and her Islanders - gave us a sound- ing rendition on her accor- dian of some rollicking good old favouites, My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean, I've been working on the Rail- road, etc. She was accom- panied in this jug-band by lash-fluttering Betty Reader on the gut-base, a wash-tub type instrument, and by Ethel and George Freeman on piano and banjo. After this, the Sr. & Jr. choirs sang 'Come to the Stable' after 'Christmas is the Day.' Then Alex Ingram and Bob Cawker favoured us with 'The Christmas Song' and 'Silver Bells' on clarinet. Michael Freeman and Bruce Prentice presented a comical skit entitled Hawaii- an Christmas. These boys grow more talented every year. Now appearing bundled in togues and scarves, the choir sang 'Winter Wonderland', Home for the Holidays and The Secret of Christmas with Ivah Fralick and Alex Ingram cozily seated in the old-fashioned horse & buggy sleigh. Following a short inter- mission, the choir sang Fred Waring's 'Twas the Night Before Christmas.' Next we had a few choice remarks by Rev. Linstead. The program closed with the anthems 'From Heaven Above, The Dawn of Christ- mas and My Christmas Prayer. . We wish to thank all our: Prince Albert friends who joined in to make this special evening such a success. We applaud the efforts of the Choir leader, Ethel Free- man. We thank the accom- panists Edna Beckett on the organ, Linda Sutherland on piano, and George Freeman on guitar and banjo. Also thanks to those who trained the Jr. Choir and to George Freeman as M.C. We look forward to their next concert in the Spring. Senior Citizens by Marion King My it is nice to be writing my own column again, but how I do appreciate Marjorie Webbs endeavors while I was away. Many thanks Marjorie. Senior Citizens Club 101 met on Wednesday Decem- ber 12, with a good attend- ance. After the usual minutes, reports and business, we had a splendid speaker, himself a blind man, Mr. Al Cossett who also had with him Miss Betty Newton, his secretary and chauffeur. He had a short film on C.N.I.B. and all the benefits that can be given to the blind. The only stipulation being, given the best glasses available, a person still has only one- tenth of the normal vision, then he-she is entitles to all the help the C.N.I.B. can give. He answered "many questions on cataracts, glocoma and other eye problems. He is the chair- man of Durham and York Region for the C.N.I.B. and I would recommend him as a speaker for any society. We adjourned with Mizpah benediction after which a lovely lunch was served by Ethel Irvine's group. A christmas Yule log was donated and served and greatly appreciated. Remember our Christmas dinner December 19th when a Christmas Carol will be presented. Also our Christmas euchre, December 22nd with special prizes and lunch.
