The MoJacks kept their five game winning streak alive with a 9-6 victory With 9-6 victory over Little Britain Merchants over the Merchants, and the Port Perry squad is now preparing for a crucial game at the Scugog Arena this Saturday night against the Port Hope Panthers. MoJacks keep win streak alive by Danny Millar Port Perry MoJacks came up with six third period goals to defeat the Little Britain Merchants on Saturday, December 1, in Little Britain. Captain Bill Bridge led the MoJacks with three goals. Forward Mike Healey played a strong game for the MoJacks as he came away with a/fgoal and an assist. He played on a line with top scorer Phil Cochrane and rookie Rob Cannon. Raymond Gibson played goaltender for Port Perry. He was backed up by Warren Nicholishen who came up from the Juvenile team in the absence of regular Merle Schewaga. The game got off to a quick start when defenceman Darrin Jobb tipped in a Robert Garrow shot after 2:31 as Port Perry had controlled play right from the opening whistle. Shortly after Jobb's score Cochrane scored but it was disallowed on: a cross- checking penalty to Healey. Bridge put the MoJacks ahead 2-0 at 5:43 when he won a face-off in the Mer- chant's end and skated around the net, shoving the puck behind goaltender Herb Rudd. Bridge, playing as a winger on the power play scored at 10:28 after a pass from Jobb. Little Britain stormed back to score 22 seconds later. Kevin Jenkins con- verted a pass from Ken Drinkwalter on a rink-long rush. The same duo combin- ed on the second Merchant goal in the second period with 2:15 remaining as Jenkins went down the left wing and passed to Drink- walter who was streaking down the middle, for the score. Later in the same period, Gibson was forced to make a key glove stop after the two forwards had man- aged another scoring oppor- tunity. The Gibson save may have been a turning point as Little Britain netted the only goal of the second period and would have tied the score at three if the shot had gone in. The second period was slower than the first as the Merchants managed to keep the faster skating MoJacks such as Bridge and Cochrane in check. Center Clark Menzies is a good checking forward and he played well in the match as did steady defenceman John Robert- son. Cochrane had returned for the second period after leaving the ice and heading for the dressing room at the close of the first period. He is just recovering from a strained knee. His return indicated that he is suffering no ill effects. He opened the final period with a goal. Port Perry came out flying in the third period. Cochrane converted a return pass from left winger Healey at 3:17. Cochrane started the play by handing off to Healey and then took the return, tipping it past Rudd. Cannon also drew the assist. Defenceman Bill Owen played a big part in the next MoJack goal when he fed Charles Tyson with a head man pass on a breakaway. Tyson was stopped but Bridge pocketed the rebound at 4:54. Menzies drew an assist on Tim Kane's goal, the third of the period. Kane went around one defenceman and snapped a shot passed Rudd at 5:44. Defenceman Charlie Brown quickly followed suit with a goal on a blue line slap shot. Cannon was credited with the assist. Little Britain got a strange goal with 10:22 left as Jenk- ins scored unassisted. De- fenceman Jobb ended up in the net as he attempted to break up the play. The Merchants followed with a power play goal as Cannon was off. Geoff Field scored it less than a minute after Jenkins' goal. Larry Patton assisted. Robert Cannon nearly had a goal when he hit the post but teammate Healey bang- ed in the rebound. Cannon was spotted in front of the net by Cochrane. Ernie Scrivens scored for the Merchants on a break- away after the puck had bounced past Owen at the Britain blue line. A Chris Robertson goal with 3:33 remaining tighten- ed the score to 8-6 but Garr- ow put the game on ice when he banged in a Cochrane rebound with 2:27 left. The victory in Little Britain Saturday night gives the MoJacks seven wins and a tie to go with seven defeats so far this season, but the team has not lost in its last five games. While the schedule for the MoJacks in the month of November worked to their favour because they played just five games, the team now faces a gruelling grind starting Saturday night and running through to Christmas with eight games in 15 days. This two-week period will probably tell the tale for the (Turn to page 13)
