OAL DR VIE RMD EDTA 12d i IRR RS In the past decade the snowmobile has become as much a symbol of winter life in Capada as skates and skis. The escalating popularity of snow machines has intro- duced millions to the beauty of nature in winter. and opened new opportunities for winter tourism in Canada. Technological advances and strict safety standards have turned this sport, once considered too hazardous for. some, into a recreation for the whole family. Canadian 'winters are made for snowmobiling. During the snowy season (usually late December to March), every province in the country provides trails, either private or public, for the enjoyment of the third fastest growing sport in America. Statistics show that more than ten million Canadians and Americans snowmobile on a regular basis. On a national scale, this means one of every eight Canadians is a snowmobiler. Provincial and federal governments have kept pace with demands for more trails and facilities by opening Zoe Brook president of Medical Technologists Zoe Brooks, a medical technologist at the Port Perry Hospital has been named charter president of a newly formed local associa- tion of the Ontario Society of Medical Technologists. Ms. Brooks was named to the position at a meeting in Port Perry last week of more than 40 medical technolo- gists working in hospitals and private labs in the Port Perry, Oshawa, Whitby and Lindsay areas. Executive members from the OSMT also attended the meeting. Ms. Brooks said after the meeting that one of the aims of the OSMT is to have the provincial government accept mandatory licencing of all registered technolo- - STILL ONLY - 132% ... * To 90% of New Car's Value * Payments spread up to 48 Months * Life Insured at our expense for Eligible Members gists . working in this province. "That would serve two purposes," she said. "It would offer a form of protection to, the public, and it would give lab technolo- gists recognition as a pro- fession, much the same way that registered nurses are recognized." At present, technologists are registered by their national organization after successful completion of a standard examination. How- ever, this is not required by law as a condition for employment in a hospital or lab in Ontario. Ms. Brooks said the OSMT also wants the provincial government to bring in regulations which would require all registered tech- nologists to take periodical réfresher courses, or re- write the national examination if they have been away from the profess- ion for any length of time. She added that the local association of which she is president, will 'attempt to bring seminars to this area, and also help to keep members informed on the functions of the provincial and national organizations. There are four registered lab technologists employed at the Port Perry Hospital. .Ron DeVries was elected secretary of the newly form- ed association. public parks to snowmobi- lers. In 1978-79, more than 24,000 snowmobilers visited the 14 of Canada's 28 national parks that provide trails for the sport. The Rocky Mountain Trench in the East Koote- nays, British Columbia is ideal for snowmobiling. The Trench is a continuous flat valley, hundreds of kilomet- res long, flanked on the east and west by towering mountains. Focal point of the region is Kimberley, the 'Bavarian City of the Rockies". In the Kimberley area there are 320 km (200 miles) of trails, with snowmobiles available for rent. The Rocky Mountain cllstie Lo IV] oe [13 Ts] centre Trench is regarded as by many as one of the world's excellent snowmobiling areas. Wetaskawin, about 50 km (31 miles) south' of Edmon- ton, Alberta, will be the site of the 1980 North American International Snowmobile Races. The races will be held in conjunction with that community's winter car- nival, February 11 to 17. In Saskatchewan, several provincial parks, including the popular Moose Mountain area, have designated snow- mobile routes. Racing is also popular, with several communities holding com- petitions during their annual winter carnivals. The highlight of this year's racing season in Saskat- chewan is the International 250, a one-day race from Estevan, Sask. to Minot, North Dakota. The annual competition will be held the first week of February as part of Estavan's Lignite Louis Winter Festival. A favourite sport for snow- mobiling in Manitoba is Whiteshell Provincial Park. Whiteshell, like other provin- cial parks, has hundreds of kilometres of trails, careful- ly planned and marked preserve the wilderness through which they run.
