" 3 asketball team: continued its - winning ways last week with a 51-45 victory over Central High School. The team is now undefeated in nine starts this season. Score 10 goals in 30 minutes [Cam Muir photo] - Cannington trounce Bantams by Danny Millar Led by defenceman Brian Nicholson's four goals and two assists, the Cannington Bantam B hockey team hammered Port Perry 11-0 on Wednesday, November 14 in Port. Port Perry is spon- sored by Canadian Tire. It simply was no contest ° from the second period on. Cannington scored ten of their goals in the final 30 minutes, after taking a 1-0 lead in the opening frame. Cannington's first goal came off the stick of Nichol- son at 3:12 and represented the only scoring of the initial segment. Later in the period Port Perry goaltender Paul Kingston stopped the excel- lent rearguard at point-blank range, one of the very few times that he would have success against Nicholson, in what was a terrible outing for Kingston. Steve Southern netted his first of two goals at 1:09 of the second when Brett Winnitoy skated around the Port Perry net and found Southern open right in front. Winnitoy got one of his own when he beat Kingston as he slipped the-puck between the netminder's legs after rush- ing down the right wing side while being closely checked. The third goal came with 2:22 to go. Cannington's fourth score came as a result of some sloppy defence work from Port." Steve Rutledge was left all alone in front of Kingston to deflect a blueline shot. It was the second last goal in the period that Cannington held a much wider edge in play than in the first. An obviously dispirited Port Perry unit dragged themselves back onto the ice for the last period. They shouldn't have bothered as the visitors unloaded six als en route to the easy win. N To add "insult. to injury Cannington added two goals in the remainin two minutes while they were shorthanded. Southern and Paul Butterworth did the damage. Earlier in the session Nicholson had scored twice and Butterworth, Winnitoy and Southern chipped in singles. . Junior girls advance to LOSSA play-offs by Danny Millar Port Perry High School's junior girls basketball team advanced to the second round of LOSSA basketball playoffs with an interesting 51-45 win over Eastdale. The Redmen now take on McLaughlin in the next round. It was one of the weakest efforts of the last month for Both teams made a lot of turnovers and Port Perry let a 19-8 advant- "* 'age after the first quarter slip away to eight points late in the match. ... . The game started with loose play. After 1:12 Port Perry called a time out and at that point there had already been three miscues, with no score. Jennifer - Simmonds, who is the team's leader * offensively, started the ball rolling when she connected on a free throw. After that, the match looked as though it would turn into a romp. *Port buried the visit- ing squad on turnovers and it was not until the concluding by Danny Millar Port Perry Emiel's Place Juveniles lost a 4-2 hockey game to Ajax on Monday November 12 despite playing a relatively good game. Clem Lopez put Ajax on the board when he converted a long pass from Craig Reid at 9:05 of the first period. ° Reid banked a pass off the boards which Lopez picked 'up behind defenceman Rowen Kennedy. Lopez. bested goaltender Archibald, who has alterna ed with Warren. Nicholishen™ all season. Both have played fairly well recently as Port Perry seems to be improving ever so slightly. Carl Durward set up winger Dave Dickson inside the Ajax blue line and Dick- son uncorked a slap shot that hit the inside corner of the post behind Norm Young at 10:15. It came on a power play. Mike Lutz was left wide open directly in front of Archibald and he took advantage of the Port Perry defensive corps hospitality by banging in a rebound off the end boards from Scot Halletts shot. two minutes of the opening period that the Eagles threatened. They threw in six points. The Eagles narrowed the gap by four points in the second quarter as they left the court trailing 35-26 at half time. They took advantage of a few Redmen errors in what was a sloppy session. The third quarter was fairly even as Port Perry managed to regain an 11 point spread. Each team used a time out in the period. The Eagles: used several time out calls in the last quarter. They took one at 3:09 apd another about a minute later. In the interim they drew one point closer as Port clung to an eight point advantage. Over the final - four minutes Port Perry got themselves into bonus foul trouble and surrendered points in that fashion. Mary Wilson of Eastdale was ordered off the court for unsportsmanlike conduct with seven seconds to go. Her teammate Anna Klin- 2:43 remaining in the open- ing frame as Paul Taylor passed to Dean Lutz through _a maze of players near the Port Perry goal. The first period was wide open compared to the other two. It was also five minutes shorter than the others, due presumably, to a time curfew. There were only two more goals scored in the concluding 30 minutes. Ajax nearly had a goal in the second period but some lever backchecking by forward Mark Cleveland broke up a two. on one. Port Perry also had a near goal when captain Tim Thompson missed an open net after being set up by Dickson. Later in the session Dave Canning was robbed of a goal on a manpower advantage when Young came right out the face-off circle to cut down the angle. ' : Port finally got one for sure at 7:15. An excellent effort by Tony Oxley' accounted for it. Oxley's initial drive was blocked but he netted the second shot. ' . Cleveland assisted on the power play score, as Lopez was off for. tripping Jim Lake Scugog League duch topped both units in scoring with 26 points. Simmonds paced the Red- men with 17, followed by Kelly Kasper and Kira Cope, each with an even dozen. Kasper and Simmonds have been the bellwethers of the Redmen attack over the last half of the season. Cope also played her best game against Eastdale.- Earlier in the season Port skipper Roy Clarke predicted that the LOSSA championship would be decided between his girls and those from Henry Street in Whitby. The Redmen must first overtake McLaughlin, but based on their season record of 8-0 plus 'the playoff win, Port must be rated as the favourite. : Port Perry boasts a strong starting five including Simmonds, Cope, Kasper, and Patti Thompson. The athletes coming off the bench have been doing an adequate job in holding down leads that the starters have afforded them. : Juveniles doubled 4-2 'but looking better "Ajax took a 3-1 lead with Kane at center ice. In the final half of the second period play was slowed down due to a large number. of minor penalties. Fortunately for both sides, not one penalty was: costly. Oxley took a holding penalty at 6:19 of the third period and by the time he emerged from the box Ajax had potted an insurance marker. Dean Lutz scored his second of the evening on a slap shot from the point 42 seconds after Oxley had been sentenced. Tom Raja and Jamie Carricato assisted. Thompson failed on anoth- er scoring attempt as Port tried to get back into the game late in the contest. Dickson had passed to him again in the clear but Thompson missed an open side. There were a number of minor scuffles in the fading minutes due to the frust- ration of Port Perry's players. It made for a sloppy period. Port removed Archibald with 30 seconds remaining but when a face-off came back to the Port Perry zone 15 seconds later they had to insert him once again. Bethany blanks Port Perry by Danny Millar Bethany Mohawks blanked Port Perry 4-0 on Sunday, November 18, at the Port Perry Arena in Lake Scugog Hockey League action. "We got completely out- shot and outplayed," stated Port Perry coach Doug Scott, who was participating in his fourth sports event in less than 24 hours. Scott felt that his goalten- der Phil Stasinski played well. "Except for the goal- tending it would have been a lot higher." Bethany now leads the loop with 12 points. Oshawa is second with seven while Port and Sonya Wie it out for thir spot. Sonya has two points to Port Perry's one. Port Perry will get a chance to move up a notch when they meet Sonya next Sunday, November 25, at 9:30 a.m. G.
