The Scugog Committee of Adjustment decided at its regular meeting September 24 that the three variances to the by-lay being sought by the Library Board were not "minor" in nature. These included variances of 45 and 19 feet on the two side-yard allowances of an addition, and a relaxation of the by- law which would require 15 parking spaces at the lib- rary. In making its decision to reject the application, the Committee also noted that the proposed area for expan- sion of the old library build- ing on Queen Street could be subject to flooding in the event of a major storm, and an engineering report sub- mitted to council three weeks ago on the flood poten- tial recommended that no expansion take place in that area. ' Committee of Adjustment members said after the meeting that the flood poten- tial of the proposed area for expansion had a substantial bearing on the decision to reject the application for the Appoint chairman at annual meeting of Town Hall 1873 It was a small, but enthus- iastic crowd attending the annual meeting of Town Hall 1873, Thursday last week. No less enthusiastic was the chairman, Doug Farn- dale, who in his opening remarks reviewed last year's accomplishments. He commended all those partici- pating in the drive towards the successful goal of pur- chasing a grand piano for Town Hall 1873, and made special tributes to Scugog Choral Society initiating the project, Diane Lackie for her production of a successful Cabaret and Tom Millar for donating the proceeds from his concert to this fine and essential instrument. Mr. Farndale also touched possible by the sale of tickets to the various events, but toa great extent by the artistic activities by Scugog Choral Society, Borelians, School of Creativity and rentals from other organizations and individuals. He paid a well deserved compliment to Zula Hall, who is in charge of this vital segment of the opera- tion of Town Hall 1873. Mr. Farndale, who has contributed a great deal to the successful operation of Town Hall 1873 during the past two years has declined to continue in the busy and time consuming position of chairman. Replacing him is Howard Hall, who has accepted the "PLANT SHOPPE... 725-0221 Lai L [ofe] IN SIMCOE CENTRE WW (busts LLP AVE (51:10) 2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, October 3, 1979 Library Bd. looking for new | variances. Scugog council's formal objection to the variances was also based on the poten- tial flood threat to the area, and all six members of the council were unanimous in the decision to post the formal objection. The Library Board has been working actively for over a year on the proposal to expand and improve lib- rary services in Scugog. Along the way there have been a series of set-backs including some public objec- tion this summer about the ocation need for an expanded library and the fact that the Queen Street building was erected as a war memorial and should remain as such. At this time one of the more serious problems the Library Board faces is the possible loss of Wintario funds. Last year, the Board received a commitment from Wintario for up to $100,000 (based dollar for dollar for money raised by the Board) for an addition. However, that commitment from Wintario was condition- al on a construction start by 25 AA HERE ER SR \ va SOSA ROTTS ry Nuclear group will travel to Ottawa On Monday, October 15, the Durham Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility will meet in Courtroom No. 1sof the Police and Fire Building, Church St., Bowmanville. the end of this year.
