SPORTS WRAP UP by Danny Millar A busy week of sports at Port Perry High School ended up Friday's football game which the varsity Redmen lost 28-12 to Dunbar- ton. John Wynsma and Jim hinds contributed touch- downs to the cause of the Redmen. For the second time in two weeks the FP ££» Be cd Gs Ms George Cope of Port Perry High School defends defence fell apart as the Spartans scored four majors, two in each half. VOLLEYBALL In volleyball, the boys teams.travelled to Eastdale in Oshawa, and battled the Eagles in four games in the junior division and four more in the senior. The juniors fared slightly better than their older counterparts as they took three matches from the hosting Eagles. The final game of this set was a close one that the juniors, coached by John Reed, lost 15-13 after breez- ing through the initial three. The seniors won their exhibition opener 15-12 and took the second match by an identical score. They Ir 4 the net during volleyball action last week against Eastdale Collegiate. Port Perry's senior team played well during the four game exhibition, winning two of the games. [ Photo by Cam Muir] dropped the last two by 15-3 and 154 tallies. Perhaps these four widely varied scores are what caused team skipper Larry Doble to call volleyball an "unpredictable game." These matches were supposed to be part of a tournament including two other teams. Neither teams put in an appearance so the games were relegated to the level of exhibitions. Neither Port team plays in a league. The Lake Ontario Secon- dary School Association. playoffs tournament is held at Anderson Collegiate on October 25 and Coach Doble hopes his seniors can get into ten exhibitions before then. Included is a return match against Eastdale on October 16. "I think we've got a good team this year,"" Doble stated. He says they "play better than I expected," against Eastdale. He was complimentary towards the play of George Cope and Mike Patton. The junior team defends the Donevan Invitational tourney championship on October 6 in Oshawa. They will have to beat out eight teams to keep the award. Doble will accompany Reed in this meet. SOCCER The Varsity soccer team lost its second game of the new season by a scant 2-1 margin to Dunbarton on Monday, September 24. Keith Mackinnon counted the lone Port Perry marker. The soccer team is now winless in two league matches after winning one pre-season game. TENNIS The girls' doubles team of Ginny Burt and Leslie Forder were the only com- petitors to enjoy much success in the LOSSA tennis meet last Thursday. They finished third of the 16 schools in the competition. Last year Forder teamed with Kathy Smith in the girls' doubles and advanced all the way to the all-Ontario championships. The midget girls' basket- ball team won all three matches in an Oshawa tournament. This was the deciding game in a best three out of five series between the two evenly matched teams. Greenbank won the first game of the series 2-1, but Prince Albert came back to take the next game 5-2. Greenbank won the third game 6-4 and again Prince Albert tied up the series winning a real nail biter 2-1 last Thursday. Ken Irvine pitched the fin- al game for Greenbank hav- ing nine strike outs and giving up seven hits to score two runs for Prince Albert. Randy McLeod was on the mound for Prince Albert striking out nine batters and giving up only five hits to Greenbank. Randy has been the back- bone of the Prince Albert team with his fine pitching performance throughout the play-offs. Thursday night he only allowed one run to cross the plate, for a 2-1 win for Prince Albert. Both teams played out- standing baseball through- out the series and in almost every case the winning team seemed to be the one who could capitalize on the other team's error. } Prince Albert started the scoring of the final game, in the third inning when the lead-off batter was catcher Kevin Martens. Keven lined out a double and the next batter, fielder Brian Robin- son hit one up the centre to score the run. Prince Albert scored again in the fourth inning when with on out, center fielder Brian Shanley hit a single then stole second base and made his way to third on an error. The next batter, pitcher Randy McLeod, singled to score the second run of the game. When Greenbank"s turn in the fourth inning came, lead- off batter Brian Lee started things going with a single. He advanced to second when catcher Bill Thompson was thrown out at first on a fielder's choice by third baseman Dave Canning. Brian scored when left field- er Denny Tullock hit a double. That concluded the scoring for Greenbank but the final outcome of the game was always in doubt, as this strong team had runners in scoring position in all of the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings.
