' Thursday, July 26th, the Seagrave playground delay- ed the slave for a day. It originally began in the morn- Ing, unexpectedly the rain- Ing weather set in, therefore, postponed until P.M. App- roximately 1:30, the slaves walked around to numerous houses and many parents were very happy to give the kids an opportunity ot work for an hour or so, the hourly rate was a quarter. The various jobs were pulling weeds, washing cars, clean- ing windows, washing dogs, hauling high apple trees, picking beans and apples etc. Some of the children wouldn't quit and kept on coming back for more. Some of us also cleaned the church sweeping floors, cleaning counters, picking up garbage etc. It was quite a worth- while event for all of us. Friday, July 27th, all the playgrounds participated in a fun field day held at Port Perry High School. It was quite an interesting day; filled with exciting events for everyone. The co-ordinator helped by handing out mem- orable ribbons to the ones who placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Near the first of the morning many prizes were given to various winners, during the middle of the afternoon each playground showed films in separate rooms, which ran until 3:30 and all and all these events were a great attraction to the pro- gramme. Mr. and Mrs. B. Wana- maker enjoyed a visit with Mr. and Mrs. E. Mitchell of Cambridge during past week and also toured the Owen Sound area before returning home. Paige Whyte, Joy and Shane Branton and Robert Wanamaker have returned home from a week at camp. According to my son, every- one had a great time. We would like to wish a speedy recovery to Doug McDonald who is in Oshawa Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Malcolm returned home from .lberta on Friday morning after spending an enjoyable week which included the Canadian Pork Congress Convention, a visit to Calgary Stampede, attendance at the Klondike days in Edmonton and a visit with two cousins of Eileens, (granddaughters of Mrs. Hazel Whittaker). Interment was held in Yelverton United Church Cemetery on Tuesday, July 23rd. -OBITUARY - DHEL BENTLEY Hazel Dhel Bentley born in Port Perry in 1892 was the only daughter of Edward Hardy Purdy and Mary Jane McAllister. Her father had a general store in Port and was also the Police Magis- trate and Reeve of the town at one time. She was educa- ted in Port Perry and did further education at Ontario Ladies College in Whitby vhere she became an Eloqu- tionist and recited around Ontario. Her favourites being French Canadian poems by Drummond, and some of Pauline Johnson's. She was married to Guy Roblin Bentley on Jure 25, 1918. Mother fostered 3 children who were very dear to her: Virginia, Dorthea, and Forbes Nasmith before having two children of her own. They lived with their parents until they went to University and left home. Mrs. Bentley loved to dress for the Annual Carni- vals at the Arena and loved it even better if no one knew who she was until the end. She has always been very active in the Church and taught Sunday School and at one time was Superintendent of it for about 15 years. She sang in the choir for years as an alto. Mrs. Bentley was a Life Member of the Women's Missionary Society and was an ardent member of the i.0.D.E. when it was active in Port Perry. She loved to be in the plays that were put on years ago in the Town Hall. H.M.C.S. Pinafore was one. She loved tv ice skate and kept it up till well in her 70's. She curled in Port and was a life member, and bowled on the Green every summer till '78. She bowled with the Senior Citizens every year and enjoyed r~arly all their outings. A memorial service for the late Dhel B :ntley was held in St. John's Presbyterian Church, Port Perry on Sunday a'ternoon, July 22, 1979. Rev Stuart McEntyre conducted the service, and elder, Mr. Alex Williamson read a tribute of Mrs. Bent- ley and Mrs. James Donald- son sang "There is a green hill far away," a hymn Mrs. Bentley loved.
