GUE SS -- CN 2 ¥ Toa e I CARY Ay par Pe a SREY DEH 2-- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, August 1, 1979 Unsafe vehicles found (From Page 1, "Some drivers get a .'ttle upset,"" said Constable Beeton. "But our purpose is to get unsafe vehicles off the . road, and have the drivers make the necessary re- pairs." In some cases, it is for their.own good, as a check is made to determine if deadly carbon monoxide fumes are leaking into the car. Const. Beeton said that some cars are truly a hazard, and he cited one case (not in this area) where the inspectors found that a couple of pieces of tape were holding the steering wheel together. The actual inspection takes only a few moments, and is carried out in preci- sion fashion by an official with the MTC who is also a fully qualified mechanic, .. and four automotive techni- cian students from com- munity colleges in the Toronto area. The vehicle gets a thor- ough going over, and if one is found to have defects serious enough to order it off the road, it stays off the road until repairs are made. The plates are removed on the spot and cut in half. Once the "necessary repairs have been made, new plates are issued without charge. EDITOR'S NOTE: In preparing this report I agreed to have my car undergo the 73 point-check last week, and was frankly a little amazed when the buggy came through with flying colours. The only problem was no windshield washer, and after a quick fill-up with water, I was issued a green sticker, good for another 5,000 miles, or so.
