18-- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, June 27, 1979 SRO SP J Walker wins pitching duel Juveniles defeat Scotia 3 - 2 by Danny Millar Like the Yankees of last year, the Port Perry Mothers Pizza Juveniles seem to have fashioned themselves as a come-from- behind team. In no game that they have ultimately won have they scored the first run. It was no exception on Thursday, June 21 when they came back to defeat Scotia of Oshawa at the Port Perry diamond. Port scored one run in each of the second, fifth and sixth innings to nip the visitors 3-2. The game was played through heavy, intermittant showers. The game was uneventful and if it hadn't been a close contest, it would have been rather boring. The absence of multi-run rallies and big defensive plays may have accounted for this. Oshawa opened the scoring in their half of the first when Port Perry pitcher Kevin Walker fielded a ball hit back to him and then threw underhand to Mike Doupe at first base. The sphere sailed past Doupe's glove and a run came in from third base. Walker has made a habit of throwing underhand to first and consequently has been charged with a few throwing errors this season. Dennis Franssen knotted the contest in the next session when he led off with a double. When Ted White went to first on a dropped third strike, Franssen scored. Oshawa got another go ahead run in the third when Phil Phillips hit a triple and then scored on a passed ball by catcher Mike Healy. Healy has split the backstop chores with Doupe this season. Port Perry got the second equalizer in the bottom of the fifth when Steve Redman crossed the plate on an infield hit by Mark Cleve- land. Doupe scored the winning marker in the next frame when Oshawa pitcher Paul McCrimon messed up Mike Healy's hit to him. There were runners on second and third at the time, For the second time in a week and a half Walker and McCrimon had met in a pitching duel and again Walker won. He struck out three Scotia hitters and McCrimon did likewise to four Port batsmen. Port Perry got three runs on three hits and made two errors. Oshawa had two runs on five hits and made three errors. On Monday, June 18th, Alano defeated Port Perry 5-2 in Oshawa. Robinson hurled a gem for Alano as he whiffed ten Port players. Ian Hartung and Walker combined to cut down seven hitters on strikes. Ladies softhall team victors in two games The Port Perry Ladies picked up two more wins last week, in Uxbridge Monday night and the following night against Pine Orchard. The game played Monday night got off to a rather slow start and it wasn't until the bottom of the third inning when Uxbridge scored twice, that there was any offence mounted by either team. In the top of the fourth inning things started to move for Port Perry as they connect- ed with a succession of sing- les and managed to score Carol Wilton, Kim Owen and Kim Neill to give the team a three to two lead. Strong defensive efforts by both teams eliminated any more scoring threats until the Port half of the seventh, when they staged another rally. Bonnie Bridge led off the inning with a single and was sent home when Karen Young drove a double into center field. Val Sweet- man's triple on the next pitch scored Karen and Val cross- ed the plate herself when Carol Wilton sailed a hit just over Eth infield. Tuesday night found the girls travelling to Vandorf to play the Pine Orchard ladies - and for the second night in a row came out victdrs, this time by 96 score. In a complete reversal of the pre- vious night's game, Port Perry came out hitting, sending three girls, Joan Wilton, Kelly Owen and Deb Filion around the bases to score in the first inning. With Pine Orchard picking up two runs in their half of the period. In the second inning Carol Wilton added one more run for the good guys but Pine Orchard scor- ed twice to tie the score and then took a one run lead in the bottom of the third. The Port team came from behind again with Val Sweetman leading off the fourth inning with a single and eventually scoring on Joan Wilton's hit. The score was still tied at five each when Port Perry came to bat in their half of the sixth inning. Carol Wilt- on started off with a triple into deep left field and then scored her second run of the game as did Joan Wilton, Kelly Owen, and Deb Filion ina barrage of singles. Pine Orchard scored once more in the bottom of the seventh but Port Perry held on to take the game by the 9-6 score. Denise Crawford, who hit safely three times and play- ed a solo defensive game was selected star of the game.
