PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, May 30,1979 -- 33 Honeydale women have busy season Brooklin holds 68th annual Spring Fair The regular monthly meet- ing of Honeydale Br. was held in the Municipal Hall Thur. May 3rd, with Mrs. Florence Ellicott in charge of the Programme. Guests were present from Shirley Branch, Caesarea and Scu- gog Point, A Pot Luck Luncheon was enjoyed prior to the meeting. President Mrs. Clara Warren opened the meeting in regular form with the Ode and Collect, and extended a friendly welcome to one and all. A new member Mrs. Klara Balling was cordially welcomed,-we 'trust Klara will enjoy the fellowship and warm friendship we offer. A good response and many interesting comments were given when the roll was called, "An Old Time Weath- er Superstition". Programme Convenor Florence Elli- cott very ably spoke on the Motto. "Happiness, like a potato salad, share it and you'll have a picnic". Mrs. Muriel Wotten of Shirley Branch, gave two excellent readings,-Mrs. Jean Carn- ochan read a timely article, "10 Commandments of a good Public Relations Offic- er", followed by the History of Honeydale Br. which was compiled by Mrs. May Raines and read by the President. Many folks won lucky prizes which were don- ated by the group. During the brief business period the sum of Ten dollars was voted to the Federated Women's Institute of Canada for their Convention Gift Stall-a money raising pro- ject. The National Conven- tion is being held in saska- toon, Sask: June 24-29th. The meeting closed with O Canada! Jan This was the 80th Annivers- ary of Ontario South District and a good representation of members were present from the 12 Branches campy ising the District. Successful tea and mint" . Bazaar This successful event was sponsored by Honeydale, Friday, May 11th, and held in the Municipal Hall and was a decided success. Members excelled in the Baking, beautiful crafts, and a variety of plants were for sale. After the opening at 2 PM by Mrs. Mabel Cawker, prospective buyers purchas- ed items of their choice from the various tables, and then enjoyed a visit over a re- freshing cup of tea. The Committee appreciate the efforts of those who contributed and _helped in any way, and a warm thank you to the public also for their support. Women's Institute * Information The Women's Institute or- ganization which embraces 8% million members around the globe is an Educational organization, non-sectarian, non-partisan, non-racial, and is open to any girl or woman 16 years of age and over. If you would like to join the W.I, become involved, pre- sent your ideas and reap the benefits revelant to to-days ° women, -if you desire a more meaningful life having fresh interests, the Honeydale members will welcome you warmly. The Branch meets the first Thursday of the month at the Municipal Hall in Port Perry at 2 PM. Blue Ray hosts special meeting Blue Ray Chapter, No 238, Order of the Eastern Star, were hosts to a large number of out of town guests on the occasion of their special Ma- trons and Patrons and Assoc- iate Matrons and Patrons night held in the Masonic Hall, Queen St. Port Perry in May. Sister Francis Gibson, Worthy Matron, conducted the opening ceremonies assisted by Brother Sam Cawker, Worthy Patron, with Officers in their respec- tive stations. Many Sisters and Brothers from Durham, Sunbeam, Whitby, Fidelity, West Hill, Birch Cliff, Golden Deed, Laurel and Blue Ray were well represented and warm- ly welcomed. It was a pleasure to greet Sister Bess- ie Cosway D.D.G.M. of Dist- rict No. 11, from Whitby Chapter. Very sorry to hear that Sister Agnes Wallace, past D.D.G.M. is in Scar- borough General Hospital. "Best Wishes" from Blue Ray Chapter for better health soon. We were pleas- ed to have Sister Nellie Pring Durham, with us and looking just great. Many past Matrons and Patrons were on hand and extended a cordial welcome as well as many other Sisters Qualified 1st aiders The Port Perry Cadet Corps ran an eight hour first aid immersion course on Saturday, May 26, at the high school. The multi-media course involved movie seg- ments, practice and work- books, along with "rescue Annie". The course was made available by the Medi- cal Corps at CFB Toronto and this was the second time the Corps used it. Twenty-one cadets partici- pated and all qualified for the Standard Certificate. The written portion was passed with an average of 85 percent . Sgt. Dave Teskey, Tpr. Porter had perfect papers. First aid certificates are required by all cadets who wish to take advanced sum- mer courses. The Corps has qualified forty-five cadets to Standard or Emergency lev- el in the past twelve months. and Brothers from various Chapters. Blue Ray mem- bers were given a special greeting by the Worthy Pa- tron. It was a pleasure to re- ceive Brother Stanley Glass into the Chapter. We trust the work of the Order will be a meaningful and enjoyable experience. Regular business was transacted and action taken re-worthwhile projects. After the Chapter closed and the Officers retired, and Auction Sale was an exciting feature, convened by Sister Pearl Gerrow for the Estarl Committee. The Quilt was on display and ticket sellers were busy during the evening. As the June meeting will be the 31st Birthday night in Blue Ray, a draw on the beautiful hand made quilt will be made at that time. Convenor Sister Stella Dennis and her committee were responsible for the de- licious refreshmemts served at the conclusion of the meet- ing. IN THIS YEAR OF THE CHILD the 68th annual BROOKLIN SPRING FAIR will take place the first weekend in June. This four day event starts the evening of May 31st with the selection of MISS BROOKLIN SPRING FAIR and contin- ues through Sunday June 3rd with a great variety of ev- ents listed on the attached programme. BROOKLIN is a pleasant, old Ontario town located at the intersection of Highways 12 and 7 just 5 miles north of Whitby exit on Highway 401. It dontaing some lovely exa- mples of early architecture and a flour mill which has been in continuous operation since 1847. Interesting anti- que shops may also be seen in addition to the events at the fair. Plan to spend a day or two at the fair and bring the family. The youngsters part- icularly will enjoy-the KEN JEN PETTING ZOO all day Saturday. Sunday morning features a Pancake Break- fast from 8:00-11:00 AM ser- ved by the Brooklin Scout Committee.
