The award is the second highest achievement cord that a Girl Guide can attain, and for Rose, who is men- tally handicapped, it marks RHR a personal achievement. It is also significant for another reason, and indica- tion that society's attitudes towards the handicapped are changing for the better, and their integration into a wide variety of community activi- ties is not only possible, it is good for everyone involved. Although Rose has been a Guide for the past three years, Mrs. Wanninkhof says it was last year that they decided to set a date for Rose to work towards the complet- ion of the Cord require- ments. "We wanted to do this for Rose," said Mrs. Wannink- hof. *"'And also because 1979 is the International Year of the Child." Rose's mother Marjorie is delighted with the upcoming presentation saying that June 3 will probably be one of the most important days in her daughter's life. She had high words of praise for Mrs. Wanninkhof who was instrumental in bringing Rose into the Guide company and working with her towards the Cord. "We had no hesitation, no doubts at all about Rose joining Guides," said Mrs. Baxter. "In fact, we jumped at the chance. Rose always wanted to be a Guide." Mrs. Baxter also had no hesitation in talking about Rose, saying the family has never been shy or reluctant to bring Rose into the "'public eye". "The visibility has been good for Rose," she said. "It is a good thing for all handi- capped people." Rose is one of six children and Mrs. Baxter says she has always taken a full part in all family activities. In fact, says Mrs. Baxter, rose hsa helped to bring the family together. "She has given us a conscience." One of the requirements in completing the All-Round: Cord was the preparation of Citizenship Scrap Book, a documented history of Canada, politics, political parties, the governor- general. The thick volume prepared by Rose, complete with autographed photos of political leaders from across the country, will be presen- ted to Rose's teacher Mrs. Phair on June 3 for use as a reference book by the TMR class at Cornish School.
