_ by Danny Millar After the initial registra- tion for the upcoming soft- ball season had taken place over the April 27-28 weekend, Port Perry Minor Softball Association secretary Vin Walker revealed that there had been a slight drop in player registration over recent years. Approximate- ly 160 young boys and girls had signed up for the program. Mr. Walker stated that the ideal number would he around 300 but he expects between 225 and 250. The secretary felt that one factor for the reduced enlist- ment was the bad weather over the weekend. The registration was set up at the ballpark in Port. The teams start workouts on Monday, May 7th and as Mr. Walker explains, people will be out for the practices and sign up at that time. "We will have a pretty accurate figure by the end of that week," he said. There were a few bright spots as far as confirming entry of each team goes. There will definitely be four boys squirt teams and there was a heavy turnout for what Mr. Walker calls the "little girls" league. On the dark side though, the turnout for the older girls teams and Peewee, Bantam and Midget competitive teams was weak. They need roughly ten athletes for a solid team. The problem here is that there are only three or four holdover midgets and a like number of Bantams moving up. This is the 15-17 age bracket. The team could fade as Mr. Walker suggested "un- less we get a response...right now we haven't got it. It's the Canoe the Nonquon committee tells us that there are two new features this year which should appeal to all who are planning to compete. The number of prizes have been increased this year so that about one in every five canoes will receive trophies. This is a considerable increase from former years. Secondly, and of interest to younger paddlers, the 14 and under girls' and boys' event will 'now finish at the mouth of the Nonquon river at the Port Perry Yacht Club. This means that the younger canoeist can paddle and complete their race without going into the lake, which can be dangerous for weaker canoeists, especially if the wind is strong and in a southerly direction. If weather is fair, and if the Yacht Club Safety Patrol > sort of up in the air really." The biggest fluctuation often is between the Bantam girls and the younger girls. This season there is ap- parently an abundance of the younger female athletes but they are short of the older players. But Mr. Walker ended on a positive note when he stated "everything else is pretty well set."
