Port Perry Legion, Branch 419 report by J.D. Christie On Sunday, March 11th, I visited the Ajax Legion Hall with the members of our Public Speaking team and their parents. I filled in as a time keeper as some of their arrangements went afoul. There were 22 speakers in the different categories. Ed Canning of Port Perry High School placed third in the 9 - 10 grade group. Caroline Carnaghan 'placed third in the 11 - 13 group. Caroline is a student at Cartwright High School. On March 19th a number of executive members attended the Zone Rally in Oshawa. After reports were given an election for Zone Comman- der and Deputy Commander was held. Our new Zone Commander is Paul Hycha, from Oshawa Branch 43. Our new Deputy Zone Commander is Len Haigh from Port Perry Branch 419. Congratulations! Old Bills Night on March 31st was a huge success. John Maw and his Commit- tee are to be congratulated. Blackstock news The A.C.W. met on Thurs- day, April 19th, 8:30 p.m. at the Parish Hall. Sharon Umphrey opened the meeting with a hymn, then a reading about Easter Sunday was given, followed by a second hymn. The treasurer gave her - report and a nice profit was realized from the Pork Producers' Banquet that our group catered to in Feb- ruary. The Spring Deanery meeting is to be held on Wednesday evening April 25th, beginning at 7:30 p.m. with a communion service first. Our Fathers' Day Supper is set for Saturday, June 16th beginning at 5:30 p.m. The next meeting is to be held on May 17th, at Norma Wolfe's. There were 15 Old Bills from Sunnybrooke Hospital plus 20 more from our district including Uxbridge. Elmer Simms was a forceful speaker. You have seen a report and pictures of this in a previous edition of the paper so I won't go into it further. : The Benefit Day on April 7th, was a huge success. We were able to present the Harper family and the Hansen family with $1000.000 each. Many thanks to the musical groups who donated their time and talents for the event. They were Pine Hill Five - Gord Coupland Group - Pat Thompson Group - Scugog Square Group, consisting of Jack Burnham and Everett Prentice plus their accompaniment Joan Purvis Country Sounds. If I missed one I am sorry, but thanks anyway. Also thanks to the many members in all categories of our branch who worked to make this event such a success." At the District Public Speaking Contest in Oshawa Tammie Demerchant crowned 'At Home' Queen at Cartwright H.S. by Anne Kristensen The snow has lifted (hope- fully for good) and the flowers are peaking through the soil. Winter blues are fading along with the winter bulges and for the past month the students of C.H.S. have been busying them- selves on "The Stairway To Heaven". that was the chosen theme for the 21st annual "At Home" formal dance. Under the direction of Tracy Hogg with help from Lois Van Camp, the students put the Rec. Centre together with balloons, spotlights, streamers, and attractive murals. It felt like you were floacing on air in the clouds of Heaven. A good crowd was out for the dress up event and alot of familiar faces showed up to relive the days of old at Cartwright High. The girls were living angels and the men smartly . The seven finalists were Tracy Hogg, Lorri Horack, Anne Kristensen, Tammie Demerchant, Linda Duives- teyn, Betty-Jane Taylor and Lois Van Camp. Anita DeJong, our past reigning Queen, guided Lois Van Camp the second Princess to her chair. The 1st Princess and runner-up to the Queen was Linda Duivesteyn. Last, the highlight Tammie Demerchant took her place on the throne as the '79 Queen. Many beautiful gifts were given to the girls compliments of Port Gifts, The Hair Centre, Monte Carlo, Pentland's, David's Hairstyling, Country Classics, Dor-jean, Pink Dot and The Country Store. It was a memorable night that won't be quickly forgotten. Education Week Some special activities have been arranged for Education Week (April 23- 27). Our senior students will have the opportunity to see the recent videotape film of Shakespeare's famous tragic romance - 'Romeo and Juliet". An evening showing of the videotape could be arranged if there were enough parents interested. We have also arranged to have two special guest speakers during the week - Mr. Doug Tangney, an actor with the Toronto Young People's Theatre, and the Lindsay summer theatre and Mr. Lloyd Wilson, an auc- tioneer from Uxbridge. Their presentations will be geared to the interests of students of high school age and the students will be encouraged to ask questions and to participate in the follow-up discussions.
