Much of the talk early in the meeting centered around the ability of Rob Cooper and Paul Solomon to round up sponsors for the teams. Since last month's meeting these two have found 15 businesses willing to invest in the ball program. The shirts that these donations have purchased will be arriving on Saturday. In addition, Bob Knapp, the Juvenile team coach, announced that Mother's Pizza of Oshawa will be sponsoring his team. The $600 they have given will purchase uniforms of black and gold. Another topic of discussion was on the Midget Tourna- ment. Wayne Venning will be chairman of the commit- tee which was set up to handle arrangements for this event. At this time there are seven teams entered at the new entry fee of $50. This is raised from last year's $30 to cover increased expenses such as raised umpire fees and equipment costs. Jack Cook read the report from the recent OASA convention which a ten member delegation from Port Perry attended. He was elected as a member of the executive council. His report consisted of numerous rule changes, the most important one which was the innovation of the Designated Hitter rule for the Juvenile and higher categories. More of the conversation was on the subject of inviting the various radio station teams to compete against the locals. It was decided that the Port Perry firemen will play the CHUM 'Ordinary Superstars" (Turn to page 19) e plans interesting season An end of season banquet was held last week by Port Perry Kinsmen for the Novice House League team and trophies were presented to all members of the team. Captain Joe Jackman acceptes his trophy from Kinsmen representative Tom Armstrong while coaches Wayne King and Neil Wanamaker look on. Advance to All -Ontario Gymnastics Championships by Danny Millar Two Port Perry High School girls have advanced to the all-Ontario gymnastics championships in Ottawa with their success at the COSSA meet in Trenton on Wednesday, April 18th. Team coach Patricia Smith called their success "Quite an accomplishment", and added "I'm very pleased with them." Robinson was the best Port Perry performer as she recorded a second in the bars and a first in the vault competitions. Her showing in these events enabled her to finish second overall. Reid advances on the strength of her second place showing at the Vaults. It is her first year in competition. Reid competed in only two events but teammate Robin- son's position was based on four events. Three other members of the Redmen team were entered in the COSSA but did not share the success of the other two. Phone: 655-4936 Local hockey players honoured at annual dinner and dance by Danny Millar Port Perry and surroun- ding areas bid adieu to another hockey season on Saturday, April 21st with their annual dinner-dance and banquet. A crowd of 187 graced the Legion Hall with their presence to enjoy the meal and awards ceremony. After the customary intro- ductions of the head table and executives, trophies were handed out by master of ceremonies, Joe Waldin- sperger. Starting with the little kids was Mike Tobin who presen- ted the Kenneth Vizely Memorial trophy to Shawn Bradberry. This award is for the Most Improved Tyke. Jan Franssen handed out House League awards to Novice Andrew Steele and " Atom Boyd Vanderheul. Similiar awards were re- ceived by Greg Williams of the Bantams and Shawn Elliot of the Pee Wees. Stuart McQuaid gave Williams his trophy and Gary Fellows performed the honours for Elliot. The best House League player in the Midget's league is Carey Fellows whose award was handed out to him by Waldinsperger. After the formalities of the House Leagues had been dispensed with the awards for the competitive leagues were given out. The first one was the Fred Warner memorial award for Sports- manship and ability. Chris Cookman won it for the Atom Selects and Craig Menzies for the Atom 1 team. Todd Blayone and Al Ferguson copped the honour for the Bantam 1 and 2's respective- ly. John Lally was the Novice winner. Maurice Jeffery presented the Joe Fowler Memorial trophy to Dave Kemp of the Pee Wee 1's and Kevin Fowler of the Pee Wee 2's. The major house league awards were the next in line. The Howie Jones award was handed over by Tim Bowmeester. This award is given only in the. midget league to the player who leads the league in assists. Howie Jones was a midget league player who was killed four years ago in a dune buggy accident. Bud Heard was the presentor here. Merle Schewaga was given a cheque and a desk set for winning the Gary Jackson award for sportsmanship on the Midget 1 team.
