PTR EN Te EPCRA re AX ea CHAGIS 22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, April 4, 1979 Port Perry Baptists win hockey tourney by Danny Millar The Port Perry Baptist Church hockey team won the Calvary Cup tournament in Cannington on Saturday, March 31st with a 6 to 2 victory over Agincourt in the second period and never allowed the strong Agincourt entry to get back into conten- tion. Bert Michel opened the scoring two minutes into the game. In the final period Brian Payne twice victimized Agincourt goalie Paul Adamson to sew up the victory. He scored the in- surance marker in the opening win against Toronto contingent when he deflected an Ed Michel slap shot from the blue line. ) Port's first goal of that game came on a similiar play when Jan Rensink deflected an excellent slap shot by Colin Whackett past the Wishing Well goalie. Whackett, along with Payne and Rensink were standouts in the first game as well as throughout the tourney. For Whackett it was his first appearance in a Port Perry Baptist's uniform. He was the victim of a fluke accident in second match when he was struck in the face by a deflected slap shot. Up to that point he had been per- forming superbly. in that contest as well. He did not return to action, but the injury was not serious. Port's second game was a lot tougher as they outlasted a stubborn squad from Grace Cathedral. The Michel brothers, Ed and John set up the, first goal by Payne with 12:20 left to play in period one. Ed passed the puck to John who fed the unguarded Payne in the slot. Payne slipped it past Mack Conway. The middle frame was closer checking in which Paul Jones netted a goal to give Port a 2-0 lead. Jones was the left-winger on the big scoring line of center Dave Harris and yet another' Michel, (Dave) on the right side. The trio combined at the 11:14 mark to beat Conway. The Port Perry goaltender was rced to make a number of crucial saves late in the period. Early in the third period Whackett became the second injury victim of the day and was removed to the hospital in Lindsay. In the first game Gord Burnett had aggra- vated a back injury and was lost for the remainder of the tournament. Harris scored from John Michel and Sandy Kieze- brink to lock up the win. Despite the four goal performance of Ken Ferris, Port Perry won their third in the round robin series with a 6-4 decision over Calvary Baptists of Oshawa. Port was led by the two goal effort of Brian Payne and Dave Harris. Sandy Kiezebrink and John Michel added singles. On the strength of their three wins Port gained entry into the final which they won. Earlier in the week, on Monday, March 26, at Little Britain, the Port Perry team went against the All-Stars of the Kawartha District league and came away with a 9 to 5 victory. They were aided by three goals from Jones and two from Harris. Rensink, Kiezebrink and John Michel added one each. The All-Stars were spear- headed by Steve Clutton with two goals and an assist. This game . was. notable only for the seemingly out-of- place conduct of John Lonsberry. 'Late -in the game, after sustaining a penalty, Lonsberry made known his displeasure and was given a misconduct. Since there was only 4:59 to play he left the ice. While en route to the dressing room he made his feeling of the officiating known to the entire crowd. Pee Wee All-Stars (From Page 20) end. At this time the boys would like to thank all their loyal fans and parents for their support over the season. Also many thahks to the Coach and Manager for their unending patients and guidance. Also last but not least many thanks should go out to our sponsor The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 419 for their fine support this year. Once again thank you all and we look forward to playing again next year.
