Now, that is impossible. Another resident of Seagrave, Gord Burnett, said that two years ago, he took samples from the river, and department of health analysis showed high bac- teria.counts in the sample taken below the discharge area and acceptable levels in the sample taken upstream from the lagoons. "The river seems to be getting worse," he said, and: suggested that the lagoon system might need some kind of purification unit. Jerry Heath, a chemical engineer and active member of the Kawartha Study Group in Lindsay, had been invited to attend the meeting because the Kawartha Group has been monitoring the quality of the -Scugog River near Lindsay. The clinic is a co-operative project of the Oshawa Community Services Department Recreation Division, the Ontario March of Dimes - Durham Unit, and the Simcoe Hall Crippled Children's School and Treatment Centre. The Sports Standards: Clinic is designed to fami)- iarize potential athletes of the games with the various sports offered, some neces- sary equipment modifica- tions and to" encourage training for the games. The clinic will provide for the classification of athletes according to their disabili- ties and will offer workshops in eight sport areas including track and field events, riflery, table tennis, arch- ery, swimnfing, snooker and wrestling. Participants in the clinic will also be pro- vided with information on training opportunities and local contracts which may be able to provide some assis- tance. The Sports Standards Clinic will be held Saturday, April 21, 1979, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Civic Auditorium Complex. Registration forms are available at the Civic Audi- torium Complex, Donevan Recreation Complex, and the fourth floor of Rundle Tower, City Hall. The clinic is free of charge and those interested in qualifying for the Ontario Summer Games for the Disabled are encouraged to attend. He suggested however, that the Ratepayers commit- tee keep a close watch on the Nonquon, and if the water tests and samples don't meet government standards, '"thenit is time to raise hell." Mr. Heath said the argu- ments are not whether the river is polluted, but whether the pollution levels are acceptable. He said that members of the Kawartha Study Group with technical and scientific expertise would be willing to help the Scugog committee in analy- sing the data from water samples and testing. The local committee has been invited to be present when the lagoons are tested prior to discharge in May and also when the cells are opened later that month. Newly elected Ratepayers Association president Liz Perry told the meeting that officials with the Durham Works department in Whitby assured her that the results of all tests and samples taken from the river and from the sewage cells will be made available to the committee. The discussion on the Nonquon River was intro- duced by Bill Brock, who said the purpose was to explore the situation further. **We just aren't sure about the water quality, there appear to be conflicting reports," he said. OTHER BUSINESS In other business, the Ratepayers Association elected a new slate of officers for this year with Liz Perry as president. Bill Brock will serve as vice president, Nancy Williams as secretary and Moira Fallis as treasurer.
