It opened with the singing of the opening Ode and the repeating of the Mary Stewart Collect. Mrs. D. McKean, president then read the Beatitudes of 3 Housewife. The originator of Jaycees was Henry- Giesenbier who with six others started a civic affairs group in St. Louis, Missouri on October 13, 1915. In 1916, they adop- ted the name Junior Citizens which gave way to Junior Chamber of Commerce when the Chamber offered its blessing. Jaycees became international with the char- tering of a unit in Winnipeg in 1923. There are now some half a million Jaycees in most countries. in the free world. In Canada there are presently almost 5,000 members in 189 Units strung across the country from St. Johns, Newfoundland to Victoria; British Columbia. - In 1967, the Canada Jaycees officially opened its existing office building at 39 Leacock Way in Kanata, a - planned suburb of northwest Ottawa. From this building, the full-time Executive Director and his staff service the Jaycee Units in Canada and provide a liason with J.C.I., the international organization with headquar- . ters in Coral Gables. Mr: Schilling pointed out that the Chamber of Commerce is an organiza- tion of businessmen who have grouped together primarily to promote the commercial and industrial interest of its members. Jaycees is an organization of young men who have grouped together primarily to develop their own organi- zational and leadership abilities. Today's Jaycees will be the business execu- tive of tomorrow active in the Chamber of Commerce and ip/local government. Two examples personally known to Mr. Schilling are former Whitby Mayor Des Newman, a former Oshawa Jaycee, and present Whitby Chamber of Commerce President, Michael I. Burgess, a former President "of the Whitby Jaycees. The. theories and prin- - ciples taught in the courses offered to Jaycee members 'are put into practice mainly through community develop- ment projects such as the Bowmanville Days and the Whitby Santa Claus Parade and House.
