CALL JOHN CAMMACK, MORLEY PARISH CEDRIC RUSSELL AT 985-7300 PHIL PONTE BUICK LIMITED 130 Water Street - Port Perry - 985-7309 Seugog Township' s newest . industry has opened its doors for business and went into production for the first time "on January 2. J "~~ Toronto. Metal and Wood, which manufactures equip- ment and furnishings for the ~restaurant and fast-food "industry started operation at its: new 13,000 square foot plant in the Reach Industrial - Park on Regional Road 8, just east of Highway 12. Company president Joe Beenen told the Star last wepk that while the opening been. delayed by the he start-up problems and . snags, the company should : * reach full production inthe next six weeks or so, and . have about 20 full- time employees on the job. .Mr. Beenen is a partner in the company with Robert Rose, who formed Toronto . Metal-and Wodd in 1 Both m are from Ux- bridge. © - The main work of the company is in the manufac- turing of kitchen equipment and furnishings for the restaurant' trade, and that ~- includes everything from the cookers, counter tops, dis- play. cases, tables, chairs, right down to the utensils. Last year, working out of a plant in Toronto, the com- pany supplied the complete equipment for 100 donut outlets in several Canadian provinces. Mr. Beenen said the Scugog location is a good one because the equipmerit manufactured is shipped by: truck all over Ontario and other parts of Canada. He . added that the company will still be able to serve the Toronto area market and in addition will have better access to markets in the Peterborough, Orillia and" Barrie areas. Actually, it was almost by accident that the company decided to locate in Scugog last summer, after search- - ing a couple of years without success for a suitable indus-- trial site in Uxbridge Town- ship. The two-acre site in the Reach Park is large enough "to allow for: future expansion of the existing building if necessary. Mr. Beenen told the Star that' 'the 20 or so production workers will be hired locally- 'and trained at the plant. He is hopeful that the area carr i provide a stable workforce 'and the company will pay the same wage rates in Scugog as those now paid at the * plant in Toronto. The modern brick building. will provide manufacturing -- storage space, showroom, areas and several offices. In addition to the manufac- ture of restaurant equipment "Toronto Metal and Wood also does -custom sheet metal work, and this year will be - "building a new product for large "shopping centres. These are called 'park-a-' - kid", made from plasti¢ and metal with closed circuit television 'and .used as a baby-sitting aréa in large indoor shopping malls.
