The team didn't lose a game during the tournament, but lost out on a shot at the finals by a rule technicality. Pacers winconsolation tournament by Danny Miller The Port Perry Minor Hockey Association Midget Tournament held on Thurs- day, December 28th was won by Ernestown with an impressive 8-4 victory over the Unionville Jets in the final. Port Perry's entry, Grant Menzies Pacers won the consolation champion- ship with a 5-1 win against Pickering. The Pacers were elimi- nated from a possible berth in the final when they tied the Oshawa Red Wings at two. Because of the tech- nicality in which Oshawa scored the first goal of the game, they were awarded the win and advanced to the next round. Port Perry was relegated to the consolation round which they won handily. Because of the questionable rule, Port was forbidden a chance at the gold medal. It was quite conceivable that the host team codld have won in the final but rules are rules. The Port Perry - Oshawa game was the only time the rule came into effect in the entire tourney. The big man for the Pacers in the opening game was Todd Wilbur who had two goals. Wilbur was last week's Port Perry Star's player of the week. Glenn Archibald and Rob Franssen split the netminding chores for Port. A 7-1 thumping of Orono _ was the result of the next Pacer game as the home team walked all over the visitors. Once again both goalkeepers shared the victory and both played well, Archibald allowing the single Orono score. Some intense pressure on the Orono defence led 'to .Port's first goal at 16:16 of the first. as Center Clark Menzies set up Hal Storrey for the score. Dave Alexan- der scored with less than a minute remaining in the period to give them a two goal lead. Mike Andrews, Pat John- son, and Brian Barr counted for the Pacers in the middle period to vault Port into a 5-0 lead. In the final ten minutes Charlie Brown and Todd Wilbur beat beleagured Pickering goaltender Dan Barlow. Greg Kroonenberg and Rob Cannon drew assists on the goals. For Kroonen- berg it was his second assist of the game as he also set up Johnson's goal in the second period. Late in the game, a minor skirmish broke out between defenceman Scott Heard and Bob Myles. They wrestled to the ice and were separated by the officials. Both were given double minor penal- ties. « With the impressive victory Port Perry advanced to the Consolation game against Pickering. Pacers opened the scoring at the 11:07 mark as Wilbur fired in a rebound from Mike Tobin.
