This represents a change from the policy of his predecessor, Lawrence Malcolm, who when called on to break a tie vote, almost invariably voted in the negative. But he suggested this rate of growth of hard services will not be as dramatic in the next couple of years. Newly elected area coun- cillor Jerry Jackman said his main objective over the next couple of years will be to work to bring further unity among the four wards that make up Scugog. And Ward 4 councillor John Wolters, also newly elected, called for a 'Spirit of co-operation" on council so that "decisions benefit all the people of Scugog." Durham Region chairman $¥alter Beath (who faces a stiff challenge today (Wed- nesday) in his bid to retain the chairman's position) was on hand for the first meeting, and he had some high words of praise for both Scugog Township and outgoing mayor Lawrence Malcolm. Mr. Beath said the amal- gamation into Scugog has gone smoothly over the past five years, and he called o Lawrence Malcolm a "true 4 gentleman". That reference to "gentle- man' prompted Board of Education Chairman Yvonne Christie to note that all seven members of Scugog are 'gentlemen', an al- lusion to the fact that there are no female members of Scugog council. Mrs. Chris- tie said with a smile that she Sust couldn't resist making note of that fact, but she wished the "gentlemen" of the council well, just the same. Gary Herrema, newly elected mayor of Scugog's neighbour to the west, Ux- bridge Township, was also a guest at the first meeting, and he paid tribute to the work of Lawrence, Malcolm eo at the regional level. On the lighter side, Mayor Herrema, who was sworn into office on Monday eve- ning noted that the new mayors -of Uxbridge and » LJ p J OPEN EVENINGS TO 9 P.M. (Except Saturdays) FROM DECEMBER 7th.
