The game was a very in- teresting one due to the constantly shifting tempo of the game. The game started off slowly and was uneventful for about the first five minutes with Uxbridge in the lead. But after the first few minutes the game really heated up with the home team clinging to a 13 to 10 at the end of one quarter. . By the end of the period the pace had quickened as play was going up and down the court rapidly. Early in the second quar- ter the Redmen shifted into high gear and threatened to take complete control as they were leading at one point 17 to 11. However, the Tigers came roaring back and with two seconds left in the half and went ahead by a lone point, 22 to 21. Play remained close in the third frame as the visitors increased their lead to one basket. It was the fourth and final quarter that proved to be the downfall for the Redmen. They appeared to tire as the Tigers overwhelmed them and took control of the match, winning by a final score of 48 to 35. Todd Wilbur, who along with Brett Oosterman played - a strong game, was the high scorer for Port Perry with twelve points. Later, junior team coach John Rodway appeared very pleased with his athletes' effort. "I thought we did incredibly well," he said. He attributed the loss to three key factors: the experience of the visitors, the condition- ing of the Tigers and the fact that the Redmen must prac- tice in a much smaller gym- nasium than the one the actual games are held in. Rodway concluded by optimistically stating, "We are a far better team than we were last year. Far better!" Juniors overpower ° Dunbarton 54-34 The Port Perry High School Junior basketball team won their exhibition season opening game when they outscored the Dunbar- ton Spartans by twenty.. points, 54-34. It was a good game with Port leading from start to finish. The Redmen just outhustled their rivals right from the beginning. concerned Aaron Dekker, Port Perry's coach, called for a time out and began to loudly instruct his players about something. Whatever he said worked as the Red- men returned to the floor fire up and took control of the game. They led after eight minutes 17 to 7. George Burnett was a terror for Port as he consis- tently brought down offen- sive rebounds. Guard Bob Ireland was dominant in the steals department as he played the aggressive defense that the coach insists upon. Curt Pinkowski also played well. In the second quarter Dunbarton matched Port Perry point for point as each team scored fifteen points. It was not enough though as the visitors still led by ten 0.H.A. Jr. points at the half. The second half was all Port Perry, especially the third quarter in which the defence allowed the Spar- tans a mere three points while the offense scored twelve. The big lead in the last period enabled Dekker to rest his starters and play most of his second-string players. At one point there With the match 3:01 old a were three substitutes in the game. George Burnett played the entire contest. Bob Ireland led the Redmen in scoring with seventeen points. Kevin Harris had twelve. Afterwards coach Aaron Dekker said "many of last year's midgets learned in a big hurry that the speed and tempo of junior basketball is much faster than midget. Play was somewhat ragged but perhaps due to the fact that this was the team's first game of the season.
