WAGG'S INSURANCE AGENCY LTD. 82 BROCK STREET WEST, BOX 1, UXBRIDGE 852-3671 FRR A PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., November 15, 1978 -- 23 This coming Saturday, November 18, Fred Cookson will arrive at the general store in Seagrave. He'll sort the mail, load it into his 1973 Datsun station wagon, and start out on the 25-mile rural mail route that patrick. he knows so well. When Fred finishes the 150 or so drops along the route, it will be the last time for him. After almost 40 years as a rural mailman, Fred is retir- ing on Saturday. Fred Cookson Fred Cookson retires after 38 years of mail delivery "They thought I'd never quit," Fred said with a grin during a brief interview last week. "But I showed them. Ill be 65 in January, I've had a lot of good memories and enjoyment, but I just figure it's"time to quit," he said. Actually Fred's decision to retire now was made last February when he was in- volved in a serious accident on one of the Concession Roads. It was the 'only accident he has had in all his years of driving. He slid on ice into an. intersec- tion, striking another car, and was off work for a couple of months because of it. He said it was then that he made up his mind that he wasn't going to drive another winter, and he put in his resignation three months ago. Fred actually started as a relief mailman 38 years ago, and took over the R.R.2 Seagrave route full time in 1953. He has seen a lot of changes over the years. There used to be about 60 drops, now there are 150. And today there are only a handful of the original custo- mers still left along the route. The rest have died or moved away. He started with a horse and wagon, and up until 15 years ago still used a horse and sleigh during the winter months. He recalls several memor- able snow storms and having to get towed out of the drifts. Will he miss it? He says not. He'll have some free time this winter to go ice fishing with a few of his pals, get out to a few auction sales, and next summer he and his wife Madeline are planning to spend a month in England, the first real vacation they've ever had. The mail route has only been a sideline for Fred, and he plans to keep busy with the mixed farm he runs just south of Seagrave. second period.
