RTE by Danny Millar The fortunes of the Port Perry High School football teams improved over last week as they split a home double-header on Tuesday, Qctober 3. The Senior-team blanked the Courtice Cou- gars 48 to 0 and the Juniors dropped an exciting 19 to 18 decision to the Central Chiefs.. The previous week both teams had been beaten handily. Against Courtice, the Senior Redmen came out ®smoking. They recovered a fumble deep in the Cougar's end on the second play of the game. A Gord Simmonds to 'Greg Fedyk pass produced the first six points of a long afternoon. Port quickly put the visi- tors in trouble again after a ¥ good kickoff by Simmonds. # 'Courtice couldn't move the ball past the tough Redmen defence and when Port Perry got the Ball back a screen pass to Ron Southern gave Port it's second fouch- down. At the end of the first quarter the Redmen led 13 to 0. In the second quarter three interceptions, one each by Gregg Rodd, Tim Bauer and Glen Allen and two more touchdowhs by Port Perry's leading receiver Greg Fedyk staked the home team to a 28 to 0 lead. The second quarter was interrupted for over ten minutes due to an injury to Tony Jezzi of Courtice." He was taken via ambulance to the hospital with suspected broken ribs. The third quarter saw the Redmen add twenty points to their lead on three majors. Colin-Wackett, who was an uncertain starter because of a head injury sustained in the previous game, scored two of the three. His second major was set up by a QB sack by linebacker Paul Jones as he hammered the opposing quarterback, forcing him to drop the ball. Final score Port Perry 48 Courtice 0. The offence was excellent. The defence was ¢- excellent. The only possible area of concern lies in the fact that penalties hurt the Redmen severely. Six touch- downs were called back on either clipping or holding penalties. THE JUNIORS The Junior team rebound- ed admirably from a 64-7 pounding at the hands of GL gonerts last week to fall slightly short to Central 19 to 18 in a very exciting football game. There was no scoring in the first quarter as the game shaped up as a defensive battle. The second was highlight- ed by a fifty yard run by speedster Ron Duschl to score a touchdown for Central. Glen Bingham ® scored the other major of the half to spot the Chiefs a 13 to 2 QHD HTT TTS nnn NE REEEEREEEXEEREREERERE. aus os TR ANY Pal . r py cat FP mira wml La" id FLY A 9 Js" o L Jeg 1 . Ted Wilson took a handoff from Ed Raffin and sped fifty yards downfield to put the Redmen on the board on the second play of the third quarter. That was matched by an eighty yard journey for six points by Wayne Ricketts of the visitors. The game tightened in the final period as small but gutsy quarterback Mike Barton ran the ball in from the twenty to bring Port within seven points. With less than a minute remain- ing, Ted Wilson scored his second touchdown of the day to make it 19 to 18. Coach Bruce Brandon em- ployed the risky strategy of a two-point conversion. It failed and Port lost a heart- breaker by a single point. Coach Brandon felt after- wards that Ted Wilson, Mike Barton and John Wynsma all played well. He admitted that the offensive line which gave Barton and Ed Raffin little protection needed improvement. The Junior Redmen will attempt to get in the win column when they travel to Donevan on Tuesday, Octo- ber 10th. Their present record is one tie and two losses. Coach satisfied with players "performance by Danny Millar On Thursday, October 10th the Women's Doubles tennis team of Kathy Smith and Leslie Forder from Port Perry High School journeyed to Bronte Creek Provincial Park near Burlington to compete in the All - Ontario championships. After gaining a bye in the first round, the ladies had the misfortune to meet the top seeded team in the tour- nament, and were elimina- ted in the second round. Kathy and Leslie, who had been playing together for only three weeks, made it to the championships with four consecutive victories at the Lake Ontario Secondary School Association Cham- pionships last Thursday, September 28th, in Oshawa. Smith was the more exper- ienced of the two as she has been playing tennis seven years. Forder has played for just one year. Tennis team Coach John Scott was quite satisfied with their performance. 'They met the best girls, they played well. I was pleased with them. They accepted defeat gracefully and that's about all you can ask for", he said. Kathy Smith was very complimentary towards her opponents from Hamil- ton. "They outplayed us at the net and that was our downfall." she stated.
