In agreeing to the amend- ments, Durham council went along with Scugog Mayor Lawrence Malcolm and regional councillor Reg Rose #ho both argued that the proposed development would benefit Scugog and Durham Region. "Mayor Malcolm and coun- cillor Reg Rose had officially asked that the matter be reconsidered at the October 4 meeting of Regional coun- cil after the council had turned down the application at its meeting two weeks earlier. The council decision Octo- ber 4 to allow the amend- ments to the official plan goes directly against the recommendations contained in a report by the Durham Planning department which says that the complex would not be in keeping with the surrounding land uses and would be an intrusion of urban land use into a rural area. And the planning report also points out that Uxbridge Scugog motel complex given O'K by Region Township has expressed fears that the development could hurt commerce in downtown Uxbridge, and that both Regional Road 23 and Highway 47 are desig- nated as arterial roads with limited access. The 15-acre site of the proposed development is on the southeast corner of Durham Road 23 and High- way 47, about one mile from downtown Uxbridge. REASONS In arguing for the pro- posed development, Mayor Malcolm said the Scugog Township council has voted unanimously in favour of the project, it would be benefi- wi "A 7 ot, 5 | Estimate $2000 Damage bh | Py Fi 4 Wi oh mn' bs : 1 MEY i Vandals struck R.H.
