Lally, - PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, October 4, 1978 -- 19 High School sports Football teams badly beaten by Danny Millar It was not a banner week for the Port Perry High School football teams as both were decisively beaten in' their games. On Wednesday, September 27th the Seniors traveled to Uxbridge where they were shutout by the hometown Tigers 39 to 0. Trouble came early for the Redman as they fumbled the ball away on their first offen- sive series. On their next series, however, a long bomb from Quarterback Gord Simmonds to Greg Fedyk gave Port excellent field position in Tiger territory. But Port failed to score when an attempted Simmonds field goal was blocked. Redmen defence held the Tiger's powerful offense in check as at the end of the first quarter there was no score. Uxbridge struck early in the second frame as a long pass from Allen Wade to speedy Don Will gave Ux- bridge a 6 to 0 lead, a lead which was never challenged. Three consecutive Uxbridge touchdowns from a full house backfield formation staked Uxbridge to a 27 point lead at the half. - Gord Simmonds came out throwing in the third and although he was very accur- ate-many passes were drop- ped by his receivers. He was intercepted twice in the second half, once each by Ross Atkinson and Todd Hickling. Uxbridge finished the scoring with two touchdowns in the final half. Bryce Ballingal of Port Perry and Uxbridge's Ro- bert Bell were disqualified late in the game as they tangled in a brief alterca- tion. Senior team coach John Rodway was pleased with the defensive play as he stated "I thought our de- fence did a remarkable job." He also singled out Gord Simmonds and Greg Fedyk for praise. Although he admitted Uxbridge was a very good team, one reason for his team's loss was a lack of players as many had to play both offence and de- fence, he felt. JUNIORS The Junior's game was a debacle as Port Perry was humiliated 64 to 7 by a powerful team from G.L. Roberts at Civic Fields in Oshawa on Thursday, Sep- tember 28th. G.L. Roberts scored nine touchdowns of ten offensive series. Their lone stoppage came on an (Turn to page 20) EXCITER 440 tably. po tt 'YnmaHna has something for everyone.
