Firemen win shootout with CHUM by Danny Millar The Port Perry firefight- ers jumped on CHUM radio's starting pitcher Rick Jones for five runs in the first inning'and followed up with an incredible nine run out- burst in the bottom of the seventh en route to a hard fought 20 to 16 victory Satur- day night at Joe Fowler Park. The CHUM team, who called themselved the "Ordi- nary Superstars", put up a valiant struggle and were led by shortstop Dave Mitchell who hit a two run homer in the second inning to the power alley in right center field. Mitchell also made several key plays defen- sively including catching a line drive, an infield pop fly and assisting on a double play. First baseman Johnny Major also connected for a. home run to right field in the fifth inning. How- ever he settled down after that and gave up only two more runs on Major's solo shot in the fifth and the final run in the top of the ninth. It is to Ballingal's credit that he endured the full nine innings to gain the win as he was the victim of numerous errors by his infield on balls which should have been easy outs. The match included seve- ral comical interludes, the majority of which were sup- plied by CHUM's 6 foot, 4 inch, Sports Director Brian Henderson. Henderson's antics included lengthy edu- cational sessions with the umpire, stopping the ball over home plate with his hand then claiming he was hit and should be allowed to walk to first base, and bowl- ing over Port Perry's second baseman on a stolen base - after a walk!
