Britton , cm Te Claremont school 13 dead after canoe tragedy Twelve students and a teacher from St. John's School in Claremont drown- ed Monday in the icy waters of Lake Temiscaming, in Canada's worst canoeing disaster. One of the victims was from Claremont and the others, including the teacher, were from the Toronto area. The students, aged 10 to 15 years were part of a group from the school on a three week canoe trip in northern Ontario and Quebec to mark: the end of the school term. The tragedy occurred when four canoes were swamped by four-foot waves whipped by a violent and sudden thunderstorm. Initial reports from Quebec police in the area said 18 survivors managed to make their way to shore. i Lake Temiscaming is locat- ed about 60 miles northeast of North Bay. St. John's is a private boarding school for boys operated by the Anglican Order of the Company of the Cross with a strong lee PC emphasis on physical fit- ness. ] The tragedy was discovered first by a helicopter pilot flying over the lake who spotted bodies in the water, and others lashed to the sides. of over-turned canoes. The victims were taken to; the town of Ville-Marie, on, the shore of the lake, where a morgue was to be set up in a municipal building. Parents and relatives started arriv- ing in the community faced with the grim task of making positive identification. The school became a full- time institute last year when it moved from Toronto to an old nursing home in Clare- mont. The boys take regular 20 mile snowshoe hikes in winter and long canoe trips, sometimes several hundreds of miles, in the warmer months. he The school's founder, Ted, Byfield is quoted as saying that students from schools in various parts of the country have made more than 100 canoe trips without a serious accident.
