ie 3 2 The hockey season for Port Perry Flamingos came to an abrupt halt last Thurs- day night as Port Hope . Panthers skated to a 65 victory and took the best of five series three games to one. Two nights earlier at the New Scugog Arena, the Panthers had pulled ahead in the series with a tough 5-3 win over Flamingos, and the team which finished in sixth place during the regu- lar schedule will now meet the winner of the Stouffville - Cobourg series in the second round of the Junior C. Play- offs. The 6-5 loss. Thursday night in Port Hope was a disappointing one for Flam- ingos who ran up against a spunky and gritty Panther team that refused to quit, and got outstanding goal- tending from Jeff Gilmer. Flamingos jumped into a 1-0 lead just before the mid- 'way point of the first period when Bill Bridge picked up a loose puck and drilled it into the net with Panthers a man short. This was the only time Flamingos were ahead in the game as Terry Watts tied the score for Port Hope three minutes later as he was left uncover- ed in the slot and whipped a 20 footer behind goalie Charlie Durward. At 6:31 of the second Watts scored again on a long shot from just inside the blue line, and then the teams traded goals until the 13 minute mark of the third period when Panther cap- tain Chris Bullen broke a 4-4 deadlock with a shot along the ice that found the corner of the net. ' At 16:25 of the third period Port Hope added an insurance marker with Mike Adam off for tripping when Dwight Boer scored on a shot from the point that found its way through a maze of players in front of the Port Perry net. Flamingos battled back to within one goals when de- fenseman Len Thornbury popped one with 1:46 re- maining. Coach Dave Nicholishen lifted Durward in favour of an extra attack- er with less than a minute to play but the Panthers hung on to take the game and the series. A Magician Throughout - the final game, Flamingos appeared to have a territorial edge in the play, but Gilmer in the Panther net performed like a magician. and was easily the outstanding player on the ice. He had a little luck on his side, too. On one play Phil Cochrane broke in alone, pulled the goalie out of position and with the whole net to shoot at, hit the left goal post. Three times during the game Flamingos tied the score and seemed to have the momentum to go ahead, but it was this inability on the part of Flamingos to score two goals in a row that made the difference. For Port Perry, Bill Bridge counted two goals, the second after he worked hard in the corn- er to move the puck in front of the Port Hope net. De- fenseman John Kane scored midway in the third on a ~ hard 'shot from "the "point that changed direction in front .of Gilmer. And Brad Nicholson scored a power play goal early in the third to round out the scoring for Port Perry. Third Game It was pretty much the same story for Flamingos at home for the third game February 21. The team looked sluggish and tight for the first period and a half and allowed Panthers to take a' 4-0 lead before Stu Cochrane" finally got Flamingos on the board at the 9:21 mark with a hard shot from the left side. Phil Cochrane made it 4-2 at the six minute mark of the third period and Flamingos start- ed to dominate the play. Just before the midway point Bill Bridge slammed home a rebound to pull Port Perry to within one goal. But a two-on-one break at the 15 minute mark put the Panthers ahead 5-3 and took the wind out of the sails of Atoms down 2-1 in play-offs Mrs. Carol Wilbur On Monday, February 20 the Malmont Farm Atoms were defeated 3-2 by Ux- bridge in the second game of the play-offs. The Mal- mont Farm boys came out strong and played well, at the end of 2 periods the score was 1-0 for Uxbridge. - In the third Jim White scored from Mike Dickson. Uxbridge scored twice and Port replied with one goal CALL: Special WATER SOFTENER RENTALS | ONLY 9.95... FREE: INSTALLATION WATER ANALYSIS GARY YOUNG PLUMBING & HEATING LTD. Port kept trying for the tieing goal but it was not to be, as the final score was 3-2 for Uxbridge. On Friday, Feb. 24, the- Malmont boys travelled to Uxbridge for the third game. In the first period, Freddy Cockerton scored for Port, assisted by Clay Dempsey but Uxbridge soon tied it up at 1-1. In the second and third period Uxbridge went on to score 5 unanswered goals before Port got back on track. Scoring for Port were Clay Dempsey, Andy Systma and Jeff Wray each with one and Lee Wilbur picking up one assist. In.a normal Atom hockey game penalty minutes usually run between 0-12, but due to atrocious officiat- ing Port managed to pick up 26 minutes so even though our boys played well its hard to score when your shorthanded 2 or more players most of the game. John Moore and Paul Goreski have played extre- mely well in net for these play-off games. The series stands at 2 games to 1 for Uxbridge. - Come out and support our Atoms, they play at home Monday, February 27 at 8:00 and in Uxbridge Friday, March 3 at 7:30. Wrestlers place well Continued wrestlers spend years attempting = to _ reach the Ontario championships. Mike has made it in one. Mike will at attending the Ontario Championship Wrestling Tournament (0O.F.F.S.A.)) at Waterloo University on March third and fourth. The best wishes of Port Perry High School will go with him. : A Panthers eliminate Flamingos the Port Perry comeback. The final two games of this series featured enter- taining and exciting hockey, and for the most part the teams stuck to hockey. Obviously inspired by the play of Gilmer in the nets, the Panthers, who were con- sidered underdogs coming into the series, refused to crumble. They played dis- ciplined hockey, and in their own end took away Flam- ingos' game by slowing the play, freezing the puck along the boards, dumping it into centre ice or taking advantage of the fast break as Flamingos often sent two or three fore-checkers deep into the Port Hope end. And when the Panther de- fense did break down, Gil- mer held his ground, block- ing shots and effectively smothering rebounds. If the Panthers continue to get inspired goal-tending, and if they continue to work as a tight, controlled unit, they may very well surprise the Clippers or the Cougars in the second round of the play-offs. For Flamingos, however, the surprises for this season, are over.
