Defenseman Steve Jones scored what proved to be the winner midway through the second period Sunday . night. The Port Perry team captain drilled a screened shot from the right point with Bill Bridge and Phil Cochrane getting assists on the play. Jones' goal came . just . seconds after Port Hope's Brian Seabrooke had tied the game at one goal each as he picked up a loose puck in the Flamingo end and beat goalie Charlie Dur- ward with a high shot to the - glove side. At the 11:30 mark of the third period Dave Nicholson popped in an insurance marker with Port Hope playing a man short, and a minute later- Keith Holten finished off a nice three-way passing attack with Trent Mood and Doug Christie to put the game out of reach. The victory was an impor- tant one for Flamingos as they had dropped the open- er in Port Hope Thursday night by a 74 score after running into a devastating - series of penalties during the second period. In that Thursday night contest Flamingos had opened up a comfortable 3-1 lead after 20° minutes on markers by Bill Bridge, Doug Christie and Stu Cochrane. The roof started to cave in at 3:46 of the second when Brad Nicholson was called for high-sticking and a minute later John Kane went off for tripping. Flam- ingos killed that two-man disadvantage until Stu Cochrane - was called for hooking at the 9:00 minute mark. Less than a minute later, penalty killer Dave Nichol- son was called for closing his glove on the puck betweeh the blue lines and in his anger drilled the puck down the ice after the whistle had sounded. He got an additional ten minute misconduct. and an auto- matic minor which left the team two men short. Port Hope scored two quick power play goals to tie the score. But Flamingos penalty troubles were far from over as defenseman John Kane picked up a double minor at the. 12:05 mark of the second and Port Hope scor- ed the go-ahead goal 90 seconds later. = With just "over two minutes left in the second period Bill Owen picked up a misconduct and then was thrown from the game when he took his time going to the penalty box. Owen had to be restrained by his team-mates from going after referee Ted Hurst. With Port Perry still short-handed in the opening minute of the third period Port Hope made it 5-3 and that was enough for the victory. Flamingos played 16 min- utes short-handed - during the second period and team officials strongly criticized the officiating by referee Hurst. The two penalties called against Port Hope were both for roughing but the team was not short- handed as the calls involved co-incidental minors to Port Perry players. In the third period John Kane pulled Flamingos to within one goal when he scored on a power play at 5:55, but two goals late in the game saved the win for Port Hope.
