Mr. Anthony got out of the car to seé how much damage had been caused, and was standing at the i rear of the vehicle when a third car i came straight at him. He dove for the w ditch, but his right heel was struck by ' the car and crushed between the two ) bumpers. Miss Boyd was still in the car and the force of the accident i drove her against the steering wheel. His heel was crush- ed but he had managed. to remove his necktie and use it as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. An, Ontario Hydro van equipped with a first aid kit happened along and Mr. Anthony was placed inside, where Miss Boyd, who has some nursing experience, started to apply pressure bandages to his damaged foot. In her words, she said she managed to "gather up parts of the heel so that the doctors would have something to work with." They were taken to hospital by ambulance and arrived about 12:30. Mr. Anthony was first treated in the emergency department and then went into surgery at about 5:00 p.m. Miss Boyd at first feared that her fiance would lose his foot, but after five hours of surgery, she said the doctors did a magnificent job repair- ing the damaged heel. She added that the medical staff also had to cope with the additional difficulty of Mr. Anthony's medical history of vascu- lar problems. Mr. Anthony is expected to be in hospital for several weeks, but by Monday the colour was returning to his injured foot, and he had some feeling in his toes. - He retired last fear and bought a home in Bobcaygeion. Despite their recent misfortune, the couple plans to go ahead with a wedding in May, "even if we have to use a wheel- chair," said Miss Boyd with a smile. In the meantime, people at the hospital have found her a place to stay in Port Perry, and she will remain here until her fiance is re- leased from hospital. And both say they will never forget the kindness and concern they received from so many different people.
