© Winacott 2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Jan. 4, 1978 Irate taxpayer hopes fine "burns hole in Treasury Dept." pocket "I resentfully enclose my cheque for $3.57. May it _burn a hole in the treasury "department." That was the way Mrs. W. ended an irate letter to Scugog Township in which she complained of lack of repair to her road at RR 1, Blackstock, east of the community. The two page letter, which was included in the agenda of the December 28 meeting of Scugog Council claimed that the writer had been assured last spring that the road would be fixed and after several phone calls including one to- the Mayor, the letter writer still ~did not feel that the road had been properly repaired. She wrote that during the summer the trucks 'went down this road several times with a dab of tar on and fixed some of the holes. When I phoned towards the end of the summer I was informed the money had run out." Just the words, "A New Year' gives us hope that it will be an improvement over the last year. | wonder if this is the year when our values and attitudes will change and we will see that more money for the same thing is doing us no good and getting us nowhere. We want more money for the same work, more for the same goods and machines, more for the same food, more for the same entertainment. Every year this attitude causes more "Inflation", an overworked word now, but one that has been with us for a long time. We had it up to 1921 when it ended; had it again up to 1930 when it ended abruptly. We don't know for sure if or when it will end, but surely it must. We know our costs are too high, when it costs two cents to make a "one cent piece" and six cents to make a '"'nickel"'. The solution .is simple but rather painful, and we will probably not do it until forced to. It is easier to print more money and larger bills. As long as our Creditors will accept them, everything will most likely continue as is. In the meantime, life goes on in Scugog at a pretty good pace. We have many Churches, Service Clubs Volunteer Organizations of all kinds, that keep life interesting. They are live and vigorous because many people are taking a real interest in keeping them on the move. If you live in Scugog and are bored or lack a challenge, join one or more of these groups and go to it. You will be surprised at how fast time passes, and at how much better your community looks to you. Name the organization, we have it, and it is manned by friendly, vigorous, dedicated people, but there is always room for you. That is how a Community should function! What are you doing to improve the quality of life in Scugog? We sometimes look too much to Government to keep things moving. Government has a part to play but | firmly believe that part is to provide the climate in which, and sometimes the means by which all organizations can function in high gear. However it is the interested peaple in these groups who keep them this way, and not Governments. -- | have left a lot to be read between the lines of this glimpse into the future and | hope it is not misinterpreted. "In-closing, let me wish everyone in this varied and unique Township of Scugog: All the Best, and a vigorous and lively year ahead in 1978. : Mayor Lawrence Malcolm =r IIT Port Perry Avuto-Truck RUSTPROOFING HWY. 12&7A 985-8631 LE a DC * Eh rd ip LIAO ph ns, ga it \
