The Port Perry Legion Pee Wee's were winners of the Mr. Ed Hockey Tournament held December 26 - 28 in Sutton. Storry The Legion Pee Wee's cap- tured top honours for the second year in a row at the "Mr. Ed" hockey tourna- ment held 'at the Sutton arena Dec. 26, 27th and 28th. Enroute to the "A" championship, Port were victorious in all their gam- es, defeating Sharon 8 to 1, East Enders from Toronto 3 to 1 and Uxbridge 4 to 1. The Legionaires gave Sharon a lesson in skating and puck control in the first game as they completely dominated the play. Port built up an 8 to 0 lead before letting up momentarily late Back, left to right: Brian' in the third sofiod allowing Sharon to spoil Jackman's shutout bid. Jackman made a couple. of big saves early in the game and from then on Ports skaters took over. Jones had 2 goals and 2 assists, Young 2 goals and 1 assist, Johnstone 2 goals, Vaz and Lee 2 assists each, Henricks and Goreski one goal each and Glass, Bur- nett, Cane and Foote one assist each. On Dec. 27th in their se- cond game Port met the East Enders. This was a much more physical game as the East Enders played an aggressive, hard hitting brand of hockey. Three minutes later Jones from Young gave Port a 2 to 0 lead. Port held the two goal manager Bob Storry and assistant lead until the midway point of the thid period when the East Enders scored on a breakaway. The East End- ers pulled their goaltender in favour of an extra attack- er in the final minute of the third period and Ports fans (continued on page 16) Flamingos impressive Phil Cochrane scores hat-trick Port Perry Flamingos got the New Year off to-a posi- tive start as they whipped Cobourg Cougars by a 12-3 score in Junior C action January 2 in Cobourg. Phil Cochrane led the Port Perry scoring barrage with three goals and three assists, while Sandy Cameron set up four markers and scored one himself for a five-point even- ing. Port Perry took a 2-0 lead, by the midway point of the opening frame and Cobourg battled back to tie the score by the first minute of the second period. However, four goals in the middle frame and six more in the third period put the game out of reach. Flamingos were nicked for 38 minutes in penalties in- cluding fighting majors to Rob Creiner and Bill 'Owen - while Cougars spent 42 minutes in the penalty box. ort Perry got two-goal efforts from Rob Greiner, Bill Bridge and Trent Mood with John Kane and Stu Cochrane adding singletons. Goal-tender Charlie Dur- ward had a fairly easy time of itin the nets as he faced 27 shots while Flamingos dir- ected 39 shots towards the Cobourg goal. The win gives Port Perry 14 victories so far this season as opposed to 10 defeats and leaves the team in third place. ISLAND MARINA CALL Cliff 985-7671 | Willy 985.3192 --7) Juniors win three games Capture basketball tourney in Dundas Up against some of the . stiffest competition. in the Niagara Peninsula, the Port' Perry High School Junior boys basketball team won all three games to capture the annual Christmas tourn- ament December 28 in Dundas, Ontario. - And George Cope, one of Port Perry's leading re- bounders and scorers was named the tournament most valuable player. He receiv- ed a pair of basketball shoes valued at $30. In the. Championship game against Parkside from Dundas, the Port Perry squad got all the competition they bargained for, and playing tired and injured the team held on for a 57-50 victory. During the first half the lead went back and forth on several occassions with Dundas on top by seven points at the end of thirty minutes. In the third quarter Port Perry applied the pressure and took a two point lead in the final min- ute. In the final fifteen minut- es the lead again see-sawed back and forth, and it was not until the final thirty seconds that the outcome was decided. For the winners, Cope and Simmonds led the team in rebounds and steals, and Wilbur, Cope, Simmonds and Burnett provided the scoring punch. Fedyk played a strong game at the guard spot as he had throughout the tournament. Port Perry got into the finals by first nipping a fire: up squad from St.Catharines by the score of 48-47. Wilbur and Cope both netted 16 points while Simmonds chip- ped in with eight. Cope and Burnett were the leading rebounders while Fedyk and Wilbur led in the steals department. Port Perry got off to some- what a rocky start as the team from St.Catharines swarmed all over the court. Erratic shooting and passing didn't help the Port Perry cause and by the end of the third quarter the team was trailing by 14 points. However, the Port Perry team collected their wits in the fourth quarter and an eight-foot jumper by Scott Wilbur with just 27 seconds remaining gave Port Perry the narrow victory. Fedyk was instrumental in putting a damper on a final offen- sive threat by St.Catharines to preserve the win. Port Perry got a strong fourth- quarter performance from Cliff Rodd who came off the bench to lead the come-back. In the second game en * route to the final, Port Perry met Governor Simcoe of St. Catharines, and the team took command right from the opening tip-off. Sparked- by George Bur- - nett who moved the ball quickly against a full court press, nabbed 14 rebounds and netted 16 points, Port Perry outgunned the opposi- tion 59-49.
