TORS RRN I Curling becoming popular for students It is sometimes known as » the "roaring sport" and across North American it's popularity is said to be grow- ing by leaps and bounds. The game is curling and every week some 130 students from schools in Port 'Perry and area take part in intra-mural competition at the Port Perry Curling Club. The increased interest and enthusiasm among young people can be illustrated by the fact that just a few years ago there were scarcely enough students playing the winter sport to make up a- draw for games one night each week. Now, there are 32 rinks, and the curlers are hard at it five evenings each week. : Reg Phillip, a teacher at R.H. Cornish public school who is actively involved in the student curling program said last week that there are several reasons why the 5 ~ 38 popularity of the sport has taken off among young people over the last few years. One reason is that the students simply enjoy them- selves; they enjoy the sport .and the social activity that it generates. And curling as a winler activity is fairly cheap: $5 for playing privi- leges over the entire séason, a good pair of boots will cost about $25 and curling broom $10. Curling can be as compet- tive as the students want it to be. The intra-mural pro- gram offers casual games for relaxation and fun, and for these students who are a little more serious, there are several area and provincial competitons where the emphasis is on winning. Considerable interest was generated last year, for example, when a team of four girls from Port Perry High School captured the all-Ontario championships at Barrie. This rink is together again this year and will be taking part in bonspiels and play-downs. Students from grades 7 through to 13 take part in the intramural program with about 50 coming from Corn- and the first draw started November 21 with the play- offs to be held just before. exams in the middle of January. A second schedule will be drawn up and the play will wind up with the Mudcat Bonspiel just before .winter break in March. Skips are chosen for intra- 'mural play and then an effort is made to balance the rinks with students of all ages and degrees of exper- ience and skill. . There are a couple of competitions coming up in the next few weeks in which students from this area will be taking part. On Decem- ber 28, one rink will be taking part in the Schoolboy Bons- piel in Uxbridge, and Dec- ember 29, Port Perry will host the Junior Girls - Tankard of the Southern Ontario Ladies Curling Association. The winner of this event will go on to further competitions at the end of January in Leaming- ton, Ontario. The curling activity for students takes place each ~ i eT EYER: week-day from 4:00 p.m. .
