PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Oct. 19, 1977 -- 3 Stuck In Mud All in a days work This past weekend was one which Ira Carr and employ- ees of his Port Perry Const- ruction company would just as soon forget, Friday afternoon a five-ton drag line sank int a'peat bog in a field southwest of Utica, and it was late Saturday night before the machine was finally pulled free. The incident occurred when Mike Krajeik was op- erating the drag line and the embankment suddenly gave way causing the machine to slide 12 feet where it became mired on its side in a thick peat bog. The operator jump- ed from the sliding machine and was not injured. Using some 800 feet of steel cable, first attempts Friday afternoon to pull the mach- ine out using a steam shovel and a second drag line failed. More equipment including a heavy tow truck was brou- ght in Saturday, and two dump trucks loaded with earth were used as anchors. Finally, the drag line was hauled up out of the bog. Mr. Carr told the Port Perry Star that the machine was not damaged and was back work ing Monday morning. He said that the incident was all part of the construction bus- iness, but added in a some- what tired voice Monday morning that he hadn't slept very well Sunday night. Egg continued from page 1 R.H.
