But Hunt spun out while attempting to pass his Mc- Laren team-mate Jochen Mass, and Andretti blew an .engine with just two laps remaining. These misfortunes allow- ed Jody Scheckter in a Wolf Ford to capture the win less than a second ahead of - Patrick Depailler in an Elf Tyrre Mario Andretti's car, number 5, a black Lotus of the John Player Racing team. The victory pushed Scheckter ahead of Andretti in the Grand Prix points standing, and he now has an excellent chance of finishing second overall behind Nicki Lauda who did not race Sunday. Gilles Villeneuve, the only Canadian driver in the race, was getting the feel of the Ferrari he recently signed to race and he drove well until lap 76. On corner 9, the young French Canadian hit an oil slick, spun out and was forced to retire with transmission troubles. Corner 9 proved to be the nemesis of several drivers and at the end of the race, three badly damaged cars had to be towed away from the guardrails.
