A a Pa A aE Si - 3 1 ANS - La) CATCHING IN IL VEAL 14 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Oct. 5, 1977 Your New Neighbours Marj If you are in the antique business, it certainly helps to have a genuine interest in the product you are selling. And talking to Mrs. Marjorie Oliver, who opened a shop September 1 in Greenbank, it soon becomes very obvious that her interest is both genuine and deep. By her own admission, she loves to discuss antiques, and will happily get into conversation about the many pieces she has for sale, and her own private collection of small hand-bells. In an interview with the Port Perry Star last week, Mrs. Oliver indicated that doing research and delving into the history of antiques "is my fun", the selling of antiques, she said, "is necessary for the bread and butter". Mrs. Oliver and her husband bought a house this summer in Greenbank, and have converted the basement into an antique shop. It was an ideal spot to combine both a home and a shop. She had been in business for a couple of years in Orillia, and prior to that had had a shop in a small town just south of there. The Olivers are not exactly strangers to Greenbank, however, having made many visits to friends over the years. Since moving there, Mrs. Oliver says that the people in the community have been very friendly and helpful. Mrs. Oliver's interest in antiques goes back more than 30 years, and she has built up a collection of more than 60 small bells. Orie of them, a Praying Llama is more than 200 years old. She is also very proud of an English "town crier" bell. They are very difficult to find, she says, because unless the bells were passed down from father to son, they were usually buried with the town crier when he died. Mrs. Oliver says that business has been a little slow since she opened, but adds that the same can be said of the antique trade in general over the last couple of years. People seem to be more careful with their money, and reproductions have also hurt. There are no reproductions in Mrs. Oliver's shop. Like her interest, all the pieces for sale are genuine. And this includes a 126-piece dinner setting for 12, made in Syracuse by Onatago Pottery more than 100 years ago. She calls it the "piece de la resistance'.
