Registrations for these two popular winter sports appear to be high in Port Perry, but in an effort to see if they fall in line with surrounding .. communities, the Star con- ducted 'a survey. In most catagories, the local organizations are charging more, but there are a few exceptions, The results of the survey are as follows: HOCKEY REGISTRATION Port Perry: . : Minor Hockey - (1 child) $45., (2) $80., (3+) $100. House League - same prices apply. iil Ji Uxbridge: Minor Hockey - Novice and Atom (1) $40., (2) $75., (3+) $100. vt PeeWee to Juvenile (1) $45., (2) $80., (3+) $100. °° House gue - Tykes $10., Novice, Atom, PeeWee, Ban- tam $18., Midget $20. Bowmanville: Minor Hockey - All Star $75. House League - $25. each child. Although near the same registration as Uxbridge, and lower than Bowmanville in Minor Hockey fees, -Port Perry is up to $35. per player higher for youngsters play- ing in the House Leagues. STAR reprints call 985-7383 By adding each of the three municipalities fees for Minor Hockey together, the aver- age price per player is $33.00 In Port Perry parents will pay $12.00 more than the average, An average of $23.60 for House League players shows the Port Perry prices $21.40 higher per player than the others. FIGURE SKATING Port Perry: Junior - $40.00 each Seniors - $60.00 each 'Patch per day 75 cents $3.75 (based on five days) Uxbridge: ; Pre-schoolers - $25.00 each Junior - $35.00 each Intermediate - $45.00 each Senior - $50.00 each $1.00 per patch (possible 6- per week) $6.00 Bowmanville: Beginners - $20.00 Junior - $25.00 Intermediate - $30.00 Senior - $35.00 Sutton: Juniors - $20.00 Seniors - $35.00 Once again it was found that registering children in Port Perry is higher. In the Junior classification there is arange of $5.00 to $20.00 each in Senior, between $10. and $25.00 more per child. Using a family with four children as an example, one child registering in House League, one in Minor Hockey one as a Junior skater and another as a Senior the total cost to the parent for regi- strations are as follows: Port Perry $180.00 .Uxbridge - $143.00 : .Bowmanville - $160.00 A rather depressing thought as the cold weather begins to roll-in. Organizers are hoping to ¥, start a league this winter, and a group of experienced players from Oshawa will be giving a demonstration in Port Perry, October 1. Ringette, new ice game for young girls Ringette will be happening in Port Perry at the Old "Arena this year. It is a non-contact team sport for girls and it's played onice. A team consists of 11 to 16 girls, six on the ice at a time; one centre, two forwards, two defence and a goalie with the object of the game being to score goals. The game is played much like hockey with the girls using a hockey stick with the blade cut off and a donut shaped rubber ring, 8 inches in diameter. SX A 'The girls are required to wear a helmet, mouthguard and tube skates as figure skates are just too dangerous in a team sport. In order for the game to be wide open and fast moving, the forwards cannot enter their own defensive zone and the defensive players cannot. enter. their own offensive zone. The center plays the whole ice surface. An offside violation is carrying 'Rosie Ring" across the blue line. The ring must be passed to a teammate across the blue lines which increases team play, There's no body con- tact allowed in Ringette with all the rules designed for the safety of the participants. Best of all, Girls Ringette is fun. It was started in North Bay, Ontario in 1965 and is now played not only across Canada but also in the Unit- ed States. Registration fees will be CASH & CARRY For DO-IT-YOURSELFERS Alcan CHRIS ALLEN ALUMINUM sssamar Products Authonzed Dealer $30.00 which includes ice fees for the year for two games Saturday mornings from 9:00 am. to 11:00 a.m. practice time and referees fees. Organizers will canvas for sponsors to provide sweat- ers for each girl. Coaches and managers are also _ needed. The only talent a girl needs for Ringette is the ability to stand on skates and the desire to have a great time while playing a team sport. - Once Ringette catches on, its popularity seems to increase quickly. In Scar- borough, for example, a league was formed in 1975 with less than 50 players. The following year more than 120 girls were playing "the sport, and reports this year indicate that an ad- vance registration has about 200 girls ready for a winter of Ringette. In Port Perry, registration will be at the New Arena on Saturday, September 24 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. i -------- STERLING STERLING TRUST CORPORATION INVEST NOW!
