Mr. Gibson said that the campaign will be designed to increase consumption of Ontario products by urban consumers in the province, and help promote export to * other parts of Canada and abroad. Mr, Gibson did suggest, however, that a media advertising cam- paign will be included. Also, he will be meeting with the various food retail- ers to give more prominent displays to Ontario food products in the super- markets. And such' events as the Royal Winter Fair could be used to explain and clarify the producers' posi- tion to the consumers in the urban market areas. Mr. Gibson said that part of the problem is that Ontario products are not readily identified by con- sumers in the super- markets. To help correct this, a logo or symbol for Ontario food products will be devised for use in adver- tising and displays to let consumers know that the product is from this prov- ince. : While admitting that' the job will be a tough one because foreign products are sometimes cheaper than domestic ones, Mr, Gibson suggested that the program would attempt to convey the message that a healthy agricultural economy at the producer level in Ontario is of indirect benefit to all other sectors of the economy. Mr. Gibson's involvement at the retail marketing level is one part of a four-prong- ed campaign the provincial government is setting up to help the farm producers of Ontario. One aspect will be an information unit to gather, publish and distri- bute statistical and other data on such things as "prices and world market trends; for use by the prod- ucer and all others involv- ed in the food business. A second area to be given consideration is a review of tariff structures with the aim of revising some agree- ments to make them' more equitable for the Ontario farm producers. A third area of concentra- tion will be to increase exports to foreign countries. To this end Mr. Newman Shur-Gain Protection animal health sonvice Shur-Gain... for the modern farmer. WALLACE MARLOW CO. LTD. BLACKSTOCK - ONTARIO 986-4201 will head an agriculture delegation when Premier William Davis makes a trip to Japan later this year. And the fourth area of in- creased consumer market- ing and awareness will be Mr. Gibson's responsibility. He has had 20 years exper- ience in the package food business including three years as vice president and general manager of the grocery division of General Foods of Canada. He has had similar consumer pro- duct marketing experience with Salada Foods and Colgate-Palmolive. While stating that this experience provides him with a good understanding of marketing techniques at the consumer level, he admitted that the program for the provincial govern- ment will be breaking new ground. There will be an evaluation of its effective- ness after about a year, and if the results are positive, it would probably become an ongoing program, Once the initial proposal is completed by Mr. Gibson, an ad agency will be hired to work on the promotional aspects of the program, and he will also get support and assistance from the various departments within the agriculture department. In talking about his new appointment, Mr. Gibson stressed that the word "Marketing" in this in- stance, should not be con- fused with the various marketing boards and agencies that have already been set up. His use ot tne word "Marketing" in' the "promotional program will refer to sales and consump- tion at the retail level, And while he feels that his experience in the food busi- Ontario Cou Ontario County Dairy Princess, Mary Wetherall of Sunderland will be compet- ing Je be Provincial title a .N.E. on A t 30th. oy The preliminary contests are held from August 27th to August 30th at 6 p.m. in the small east annex of the colliseum.
