£1 ss It's been a busy and hectic- week for. Hank - Janssen and' the staff at Port Perry Printing, They are in the process of moving their equipment from the Star building on Queen Street to a new plant on North Street in Port Perry. It's no easy job moving three presses, a plate maker, a cutting machine, an old linotype setter, new computerized type-setters for off-set production, and all the various other equip- ment and supplies neces- sary to operate a busy and modern printing shop. When the move is comple- ted in the very near future, it will mark the end of an era of sorts. For the first time in almost 70 years the unique sounds of printing equipment in operation will no longer be heard in the shop on Queen Street. And for Bruce Beare, who has worked as a printer in the same shop for almost 40 years, the move will cer- tainly be- cause for a moment's refléction. Anyone who has walked into the print shop on a . working day would probably have seen Bruce, either sitt- ing, pipe firmly in mouth, in front of the linotype machine, or operating one of the several presses that have been used by the com- pany over the years. Talking about the move out of /the familiar shop, Bruce said it will be a change for him, but "you've got to 'keep up with the modern times.' 'And then he® added with a laugh: "After -40 -years here; Pll probably come to the wrong building some morning after we move. Bruce started in the busi- ness in 1937 as a printer's devil, working after school and on Saturdays. The printer's ink soon got into his veins however and two years later he was working a full six-day week, The business at that time was owned by Mr. Sam Farmer, (Viele eTeTeYs Slee leleTeoToTe el 0 ys | TREASUR CORNER 4 108 Water Street - Port Perry 0 o 985-8226 8 { We feature:. 0 5 i A HOODOO QO QO OAC PORT PERRY Aug. 27 SCUGOG COMMUNITY ARENA HANDCRAFTS © CROCHET DOILIES = « KNITTING © BRAIDED RUGS \ © BABY GIFTS !';*® DOLL HOUSE FURNITURE SUMMER HOURS: Monday to Wednesday - Noon to 9 p.m. Thursday, Friday & Saturday 9am to9 p.m. Sunday - Noon to 6 p.m. QO OQ AC NEVER INA AFA RY I CARR aN FAIA OS TITRA hod A FNS BLN BS ANAM STRUT EN ARR who had purchased the old Port Perry Standard news- paper in 1907. Mr. Farmer died in 1948, and his family continued the newspaper and the printing business until 1963 when it was pur- chased by Mr. Per Hvid- sten. While Bruce has seen a lot of changes over the years, he says that orders for such things as auction sale notices, letterheads, en- velopes and other business forms are still pretty much the same. The big change, however, has been in the technology used to produce these kinds of printing. Until about ten years all the printing, in- cluding the Star Newspaper, was done through the hot- type process. Now, almost all of it is done through the cold-type or off-set method. With this switch from hot to cold type-setting, the lino- type machine got less and less work and Bruce found himself behind the key- board of a new computeriz- ed type-setter. Unlike the linotype, the compugraphic has a standard typewriter key-board, and although Bruce has never had a typ- ing course, he now does almost all the type-setting on this machine. And during his career as a printer Bruce has set type in both French and Latin, while 'admitting with a smile that he doesn't speak or understand much of either. Along with the changes in' the type-setting process, the printing: equipment itself has greatly improved over the years.
