Peter Hvidsten Confused by metric conversions? Don't feel bad, there are about 20 million others in this fair country who are in the same boat, and probably wondering who's responsible for thinking up this hair-brained scheme. Recently we sweltered through the hottest sum- mer temperatures registered in many years. Tem- peratures soared to 37 Celsius locally. Doesn't sound too hot, until you convert it to fahrenheit, which gives the equivalent of about 100 degrees, and coupled with Je humidity made it feel near 115 degrees Fahren- t. Now that not only sounds hot...it is damn hot! For the past two years we have been struggling, trying to change Fahrenheit to Celsius, pounds to kilograms, and ounces to millilitres. Now comes the big one. The one that could cost many people a lot of money if they don't adapt to the new measure quickly and accurately. Miles per hour will become obsolete this Septem- ber and kilometers per hour will come into effect. Have you any idea how fast you're going when your car is travelling at 100 kilometers per hour? If you don't, you had better learn soon, because you will be travelling 15 miles per hour (excuse me, 23 kilometers) over the legal 50 MPH limit. Commencing in September, 1977, highway signs will have speed limits changed to kilometers per hour and distances in kilometers. Now, if you are a driver of a car older than the 1977 model, you may have some problems since your speedometer only registers MPH. But, the Metric Commission of Canada has a few solutions. Firstly, you can purchase a conversion kit. The kit contains detachable self-adhesive and clearly visible numerals, pointers and KMH decals. They take only a few minutes to install and fit most makes of cars. With this kit you can indicate the complete range of speeds or the most frequently used, GUSH 2% LO XMM {of Nighway speed, and 50 KMH for ty : According to the commission "Metric is a real- ity". During the month of July the Star delivered complimentary copies of the paper to many of the cottagers and homeowners around the lake. It was an effort to interest these people in the affairs of the township of which they are a part, and to have them become a part of the community, instead Since they were handed out, we have received a number of new subscribers, which indicates that there are some that do care about what happens in Scugog Township. Delivering the papers to each of the beaches on. the Island was by no means a menial task. With two great kids to do the running, Doris and Tony Janssen, and myself at the wheel, we took off each week, the car loaded with the extra copies of the Star. Up and down the beaches we travelled, placing the papers in doorways, under mats and in mailboxes. A total of 65 miles was registered each week as we went about our route. Only one minor accident occurred during the trips, and that was when young Tony tried desperately to get away from a dog who had decided he did not like paper boys. Falling on the roadway, he skinned his knee and hand. From this point on, we were very cautious about loose dogs. Perhaps one of the most gratifying, but humorous incidents that occurred was when the paper was handed to a man sitting on his porch. He said that he did'not want a paper, to which Tony replied, "It's free". ; "I don't care, I don't want it," was the reply. As Tony began to walk away, a woman out onto the porch from the house. "I'll take it," she said. And then she let into the man sitting beside her. "Why didn't you take it. You're always complain- ing about the cost of things, and when something comes along that is free, you won't take it, etc. etc. ete." 3 It was a good experience for all of us. The kids are using the money they made to buy themselves a bicycle and a-sleeping bag. I learned where many of the beaches around Lake Scugog are situated and what they look like. And altef living in the area for near 10 years, it's about e. 'A Good Decision - By Scugog Council Scugog Township Council deserves credit for the ® decision it made last week to take part in the Ontario Home Renewal Program. Firstly, the program and the funds available from It to the municipality will be of benefit to low and fixed income home owners through the provision of grants and low Interest loans for needed repairs & and upgrading of houses and property. That Is the obvious reason why some credit Is due. Another reason is that the Council showed that it can be responsive to the wishes of local citizens who indicated a need for the renewal program. It wasn't an easy process, however. On two occasions recently, the Council discussed the program and expressed only lukewarm enthusi- asm because of the seemingly complicated and time consuming administrative problems it would present. 'But to thelr credit, Council agreed to get more information and clarification of what exactly would be Involved should the Township opt into the program. A discussion July 25 with a representative & from the provincial Ministry of Housing put the program into a new perspactive, cleared up several misunderstandings, and opened the way for Township residents to take advantage of the funds being "offered. It Is not known at this time just how much money the Township will have for allocation in 1977, but estimates place it at about $60,000. Next year, however, close to $100,000 could be available for grants and low interest loans. Several senior citizens in the Township have already expressed serious interest In making applications for such things as insulation, a new roof, up-graded hot water systems " and improved wells. If the program can, make living a little easier for a few seniors and others who are struggling to cope with rising costs, then the added 'administrative 'burdens-on-the Township will be well worth-it. : Again, it was gratifying to see the Council take positive action that will result in direct benefits to .o those who need them most. ~ A Little Care And Caution, Please Western Weekend has arrived, giving both resid- ents and visitors to Scugog an opportunity to let loose and enjoy a little mid-summer fun and merriment. Reading through the line-up of events and activities one can conclude that only a recluse would not be able to find something of Interest during the four-day fest. Western Weekend of course, has grown rapidly since its start six years ago, and with such features as Champlonship power boat races it is expected to attract thousands of residents and visitors alike. In wishing the Chamber of Commerce organizers good success this year, and a good time to everyone who attends the activities, a word of caution Is necessary. With canoe and power boat races on Scugog, a lot of activitly will be taking place on the lake and on the + waterfront. It would be wise for spectators on the shore and those in boats to exercise a little more care and caution, and organizers should go out of their way to help insure the safety of all involved. A second note of caution concerns the three dances planned for the New Arena. There have been some disturbing incidents at dances at the arena which resulted in part from the abuse of alcohol. Obnoxious behavior, intoxication, and fighting really have no place at public functions such as these. With a little discretion and moderation on the part of those who attend the dances to enjoy themselves, and some firm control by those who are running the affairs, distasteful incidents may be avoided. Dance organizers, backed up by the police officers In attendance have the power and authority to head off potentially ugly situations before they develop. develop. With a little caution, moderation and control, Western® Weekend can be an unqualified success, a & credit to the community offering entertainment and enjoyment to everyone.
