Guest speaker for the evening was Mrs, Joan Brown, Ornamental Plant Breeder at the Royal Botani- cal Gardens, Hamilton. She 'was born 'in Toronto where ~ she received her B.Sc. in Botany at the University of Toronto and went on to obtain her Master of Science degree at the University of Guelph. She became a member of the Botanical Gardens' staff in 1974. Ms. Brown took us on an inter- esting tour as far back in history as 2300 B.C. when the Chinese were known to be cultivating roses. In actual fact, fossils found in Colorado prove that the ear- liest roses existed 40,000,000 years ago! Mrs. Brown's knowledge of her subject was évident and her running commentary was full of sur- prises as she showed slides of rose varieties, their culti- vation and hybridizing through the centuries, giv- ing us our many present day rose specimens. The show is obviously a _popular one as 95 entrants participated which present- ed some difficult decisions for Charles Davis, Show Judge. Gibb Marlow of Brooklin walked away with first prize for Best White Rose, as well as taking home our Rose Bowl Trophy for Best Red Rose. Best Decorative was awarded to Marg Powell of Columbus, In keeping with the cele- bration of the Queen's Jub- ilee, President Marg Davis offered 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes to those entering that 'class 'and 'the winners were Audrey Young, Marg Powell and Sue Brack respectively. Gordon Wick gave.a brief but interesting resume of the O.H.A. Convention in Windsor, total attendance being 600 people from all over the Province and he commented that there are begins next by Deb. McLaughlin Once again the laughter of craftmaking, playing, singing and dancing has returned 'to entertain the children in the Blackstock area and relieve poor mom of the "what can I do today?' blues. Playground will begin on July 4th and will end on August 12. It is for children 'ages 4 to 10 at the Black- stock Public School. The fees are quite -reasonable considering the cost of an all day babysitter. They are $1.00 per week to a maximum $3.00 family per week or $5.00 per season to a maximum $15. family per season. Now you can't beat that! The hours are Mon- day to Thursday 9 to 12 noon and 1 to 3:30 p.m. and till noon on Friday. No lunch time supervision is given. This gives the child- ren-a break and also one for now 248 Horticulture Soci- eties in Ontario, Shs Val Hundert thanked Joan Brown for sharing with us her knowledge of the history of roses and Marg Davis thanked Grace Coe and her husband for their assistance in designing and construct- ing the float for the Brooklin Fair Parade, which won First Prize for originality, She also thanked the show Judge and commented on the continuing zeal of the participants. 'Summer playground the playground officials. This way we keep everyone rested and happy! If you wish to go shopping for: the day or something involving the entire day and it is not convenient to pick up your child, it may be possible to make arrangements with one 'of us who is planning to stay for the noon hour. I feel I have very capable and responsible help this summer who can entertain the children and 'keep them out of the trees'. They are the very com- petent Jean Horton and Laura Love. We have many special days planned such as Pet Day, Hobo Day, Indian Day, Clown Day, Backward Day and many many. more including special visitors, I sincerely hope we can make this summer the best yet - for the children and for their moms!
